“What did you mean, ‘we’re not friends anymore’?” Will demands.
“Oh god,” Mike says faintly, because he can’t think of a single other thing to say.
“It’s Will, actually,” Will says. “Or maybe you forgot that in the five years since you last bothered to speak to me before you sent me this.”
He unfolds his arms to brandish a crumpled envelope in Mike’s face, and he knows without even looking at his own handwriting on the front exactly what it is.
(or, the summer after all his friends graduate from college, mike writes will a letter to say goodbye. predictably, nothing about this goes as planned.)

Summary
Just when he thinks it’s too unbearable and that a shower really isn’t worth staying up for, the tension snaps: Mike lets out a hearty groan, then sinks to the floor in that space between the two beds, his knees pulling up towards his chin and his hair fanning into a disheveled mess around him.
He does this, Will thinks to himself with familiarity that was once comforting, but now only feels jarring and sore, a recognition of an intimacy that’s too close.
He does this when he’s upset, because he wants somebody to ask him what’s wrong.

Will clears his throat. He looks like he’s ready to cry. “And, um, what am I swearing?”
“You, younger Byers,” Robin says, “are swearing that you will be your truest self and not neglect your hard-won feelings, and that you will try to believe in a world where the boy you love loves you back. In the gay way, of course,” she adds.
“Of course,” Will sighs. “Well, then, I swear.”

Summary
“I didn’t want to lie to you.” Will’s voice is quiet and breakable, so different from the defensive, factual tone it should be. He should be meaner. Harsher. Crueler. “I just – I didn’t think it’d matter.”
It feels like Mike’s entire body trembles, shakes like it’s about to burst. “You didn’t think it’d matter if you lied to me?” He hisses, and his voice cracks, just the littlest bit.
Mike Wheeler tries his best to navigate his way through the end of the world, with lots of maybes and misplaced anger.

Will felt gravity leave him, felt his body untether itself from this mortal realm and float directly into the setting sun. The room was casted in a yellow-gold, beamless and directionless - and because Will was a sinner, he replied, "About what?"
Mike's face creased. He shook the rolled up painting, tightening his fist around it. "About this, Will. Don't play dumb."
(AKA: Oh, you know - just your standard Mike-finds-out-about-the-painting confrontation.)

Will scowls. “Not funny,” he says for a third time. “Go away.”
Mike drops the stick unceremoniously. It falls to the damp forest floor, tumbling over itself before coming to a stop, splashing a few drops of water onto the hem of Will’s pants. “Okay fine,” Mike says. “I’ll bite. What’s your deal?”
The other fact of the matter is this: tomorrow, Will is going to walk into the Upside Down and not look back. Tomorrow, he is either going to kill Vecna or die trying — and Mike is not going with him.
Even the actual apocalypse had to end sometime, but Will didn’t exactly expect it to happen like this.

Off the bat, Hopper just assumed that Mike coming along was one big plot to get back together with El. That’s what he’d been bracing for, at least; having El post up in he and Joyce’s room on an air mattress, keeping the door open three inches when she was hanging out with the boys in their room.
But that’s not what happens. Not what he thinks happens, at least.
Or, Hopper has a feeling about Will and Mike.

“You can’t help me in this.”
“I can,” she says, with the conviction of Jim Hopper standing on a platform and closing his eyes to meet the blast.
El’s hand comes up to rest on Will’s forearm, still crossed over his chest. “I can try to take it away,” she whispers.
It slips out of him too easily. “I don’t think you can take away being gay,” he says, even softer.
Seconds pass, and El doesn’t move. Will blinks through the surprising crystalline wetness in his lashes. He thought he would feel the earth move beneath his feet the moment he said it aloud. He thought the sun would shift in Eleven’s face, the curtains might rend in two like the sky when they nailed the Messiah to the cross. Or maybe the air would turn to ice and fill his veins with that living death of misery like the shadow monster.
None of these things happen. He breathes, and El breathes, and they look at each other, each one quizzical in their own right. Only his heart begins to thump a little unevenly.
“What’s gay?” she asks, finally.

Bruce realises it then with a sudden startle, all the anger and frustration that had been building up over the last couple days freezing under his skin, blood cold.
"You're trying to make me angry…" Bruce carefully says out loud, all the pieces of the puzzle finally coming together, watching the way Jason's shoulders tense at the shift in tone from angry to a calculative calmness, "On purpose?"
Jason's previous expression, one filled with twisted amusement at Bruce's apparent annoyance is immediately replaced with something tragic. His blue eyes grow wide and fearful, and Bruce watches in delayed understanding as the boy takes a fearful step back.
(Jason's change in behavior is cause for concern. Fortunately, Bruce is a pretty good detective — most of the time.)

Normally, this is the part in the conversation where the other person chokes on their drink, or in some unfortunate cases, spits it everywhere. Something more than just staring blankly, certainly. But Frank’s face is completely void of emotion, like he hadn’t even heard what Gerard said.
“I’m serious,” Gerard says, just in case that wasn’t clear.
“No, I know you are.” Frank is still looking entirely unaffected. “It’s just — who the fuck are you, dude?”
