Buck let out a soft snort at that. “They can be pretty intimidating sometimes.” He smiled, finally looking up, catching Chris already looking at him.
“Buck?”
“Yeah?”
Chris bit the inside of his cheek, tilting his head. “You know it’s okay, right?”

Summary
When Eddie first introduced Christopher to Buck in the car after the earthquake, Buck wasn't what Eddie expected. Usually, when people meet Christopher and find out he has CP, they treat him like he's a fragile thing, that he'll break, the second that they do something.
Buck wasn't like that. He treated Christopher like any other kid. In the car they talked Eddie's ear off together, they talked about dinosaurs, then space, then everything and anything.
And just like that, Buck became Christopher's best friend, and Christopher became Buck's.
Throughout the years, Eddie starts finding similarities between the two, even if they weren't related by blood.

And Eddie has never, not once, wanted Buck to be less.
The surplus, the overflow, the fourth tangent on a story that started somewhere else entirely — that's not the price of Buck. That is Buck. And more of Buck has only ever meant more to love, and Eddie spent enough years running on empty to know what it means when someone fills up every room they walk into so completely that Eddie is overflowing with it most days.

Eddie Diaz was a very secretive person, the rest of the 118 knew it from the moment they met him. He was reluctant to tell them anything about his personal life, with the slight leeway he allowed with his son.
Obviously, they had attempted to dig for more information at first, but after almost 2 years of vague responses, they had given up. They resolved that they would never receive a full debrief on the life of Eddie Diaz.
That is, until a call goes bad and suddenly Bobby has to call the husband nobody knew he had to come visit him in hospital.

Buck managed to push to his feet and took a step forward, swaying precariously.
“Stop, Buck! I’m coming to you!” Eddie shouted. “Don’t move!”
Buck took another step forward anyway, either not hearing Eddie or not comprehending what he said, and promptly lost his balance. He fell, tipping to the left, his shoulder colliding heavily with the fire-riddled wall. Eddie watched in horror as the flames made contact with Buck’s body, licking up at Buck’s face and neck where his skin was exposed.
The sound of Buck’s scream would haunt Eddie for a long, long time. He collapsed back down to the floor, his gloved right hand flying up to the burnt skin.
Or: Buck gets hurt on a call. It almost ruins his and Eddie's relationship.
