Summary
the Rage was a parenting instinct, meant to help normally weak hobbits protect their children. Of course, if one didn't have their own children, it could kick in around those close enough to be considered family. In retrospect, the only surprising thing was that it hadn't happened sooner.

The dwarrow watched on in horror as the Goblin poked and prodded the small creature. "I've heard of your kind, but I have never met one. Tell me, are there more of you?"
The halfling was silent, responding with a steady stare.
The goblin's lips twisted in displeasure, shaking Bilbo. "Why don't you answer?"
"Let the lad go," Nori yelled. "He can't speak!"
"Can't speak?" The Goblin King looked at the dwarrow in surprise. He looked back at the halfling, a roaring laugh exploding from him. "Don't tell me they're unaware as to what you are?"

Erebor's time has finally come, now that Thorin has gathered together enough loyal Dwarves to make it to the Lonely Mountain alive. Dwalin just wishes they weren't a cursed number.
Oh, and that the irritatingly bull-headed Halfling Tharkûn found in the Shire would go home already. The Wilds are no place for a half-starved, girl-child gentleHobbit who can neither fight nor fend for herself.Belda's time to escape has finally come, now that she's managed to convince (read: emotionally blackmail) Gandalf into agreeing to let her come on the quest thingy he seems to be on, as well as convince the annoyingly bull-headed leader of the Dwarven pack to let her join them until Rivendell, at least. She only hopes she can earn their respect.
Especially his second-in-command.
Oh, and that they won't kill her when they find out the truth. She might not be their Burglar yet, but she regrets lying to them anyway.

Bella was the only child of the Shire's most notorious love match, but she's completely aware that having those expectations in her own romance is the height of stupidity. But then Thorin starts going about, sneakily proposing in front of everyone with a mathom she's told could purchase the Shire and telling all and sundry that he'll take only her as his queen, and well. She might be a little discombobulated.
OR Hobbits don't just get married without some extensive contract negotiation.

When Alma found out about his deception she tried to get rid of them herself. They were big and healthy now, no reason why her son should try to stop her, no reason why he should cry and beg as she gathered them in a box and brought them to a field outside of town and set them free.
No reason at all, in her opinion.
But by the next day they were back! Riding in his unruly hair (her Pedro's hair!) and hiding under his clothes.
Alma had been furious with her son, convinced that he had gone out and brought them back but he'd promised that he didn't.
"They came back on their own." he'd said, stroking the biggest of the rats.
"I think they like me." he had whispered with such a look of wonder and wistfullness on his face that it had thrown Alma for a loop.
