    Summary

"This is for Bobby. Even if he really is dead, he deserves real justice, not a stupid memorial plaque in the firehouse and only one person behind bars.”

Athena nodded, conceding. “Ok, then. For Bobby, dead or alive.”

They reached over the coffee table, gripping each other’s hands in a tight shake.

“Does this make us partners?” Buck asked, a twinkle in his eye.

Athena sent him a look, a scowl creeping across her face. “What do you think?”

    Summary

“When I was little, maybe six or seven, I remember my mom saying that she ‘had to live with a reminder of her loss, staring her in the face every day.’ That’s all I ever was to them. Their grief was a cage, a gilded one, but still. And they locked me and Maddie in there with them. Maybe, doing this, asking them to sign away any claim they have to me? It-it sets them free, sets us all free.”

Bobby’s not thrilled about the metaphor, and even less thrilled about the anecdote.

Stories like that remind Bobby why simply telling the whole truth – that Bobby and Athena were pursuing an adult adoption of Buck – is out of the question. Margaret and Phillip are manipulative at best, abusive at worst; and their reaction to such an announcement would be wholly unpredictable. Keeping the adoption out of things is the best course of action, Bobby knows that. But God does he want to rub it in their faces that, for the rest of his life, he gets to be Buck’s dad and claim him as his son.

    Summary

It’s not real. It’s not real. It can’t be.

He’s hallucinating. A concussion. Hell, maybe this is some sort of purgatory.

“Fuck,” he rasps, the word torn from him as a cough shakes his body. Copper floods his tongue. He blinks, disoriented, and Bobby’s still there, solid, impossibly so, haloed in dust.

    “You’re not real,” Buck croaks.

“Maybe,” Bobby says with a small shrug, the ghost of a smile tugging at his lips. “Or maybe death sent me as a kindness.”

“You’re not real,” Buck insists again, the words cracking apart.

“I’m real enough,” Bobby murmurs. “Now breathe.”

Buck tries. It hurts, sharp, jagged, but the air finds its way into his lungs. He coughs, choking on dust and tears as the collapsing world bleeds back into sound. When he opens his eyes again, Bobby’s still there, steady, unshakable, holding the weight of Buck’s grief in his gaze. He nods downward.

“Put pressure on that before you bleed out, dumbass.”

    or

When Buck gets trapped during an earthquake, he’s forced to confront the one thing he’s been running from — grief.

    Summary

While she waits for their coffee she feels a small tug on her pant leg as she’s checking her phone.

A small boy, maybe three or four, she’s not sure is looking up at her. His bottom lip is quivering, his wide blue eyes brimming with tears. Her maternal instincts want to reach out, cup his cheek, or pull him into a hug, just some way to offer him some comfort. To take away the fear in his eyes, but she pauses, at the mark over the boy’s eye. She’s not sure what it is, it could be a burn, it doesn’t look the right shape to be a fresh bruise.

Crouching down so she can be at his eye level with him she pitches her voice low, “Hey sweetie, my name is Athena. Could you tell me yours?”

“Evan,” his voice is so quiet she can barely hear him over the white noise of the mall.

“Ok Evan that’s really good, what about your last name, could you tell me that?”

    “Buckley.”

“Well done sweetie, do you know where your parents are?”

“I lost my Bobby.” he reaches forward to fist his hand into the front of her shirt, pressing his body against hers. “Can you help me find him?”

    Or

Evan wanders away from Bobby at the mall and gets lost, Athena helps him find his way back to Bobby.
