The plot covers the events of A Court of Mist and Fury with major alterations. In this AU, we see what could have happened if characters were honest with each other, and talked things out rather than speaking in riddles or just avoiding topics altogether. We also get some actual apologies for egregious behavior that got glossed over in canon (looking at you, Rhys Under the Mountain) and big reveals that get put off to later books or not at all (looking at you, Lucien's paternity).
Relationships in this AU are fully consensual rather than based on bargains made under duress, half-truths, or huge power imbalances, so romances that had an enemies-to-lovers flavor feel more like friends to lovers.

Lucien was having an awful day even before he managed to get caught in a snare. He's not exactly pleased about the whole 'being stuck as a fox' thing either. But he also can't find it in himself to complain about the human woman who took him in upon seeing his injuries. Once he's able to shift back it only gets more complicated and he finds himself returning to the Archeron estate. Elain is kind and as much as Lucien tries to convince himself to stay away he can't help but look for the warm gardener who sees past his scars and smart remarks.
Elain has enough on her plate without the fox she rescued in the woods turning into a fae male. She is keenly aware of what she is risking when she opens the door for Lucien, but even after warnings about potential enemies in the Spring Court Elain can't imagine that the sweet fox who had slept on her pillow while he recovered from his injuries could possibly mean her harm. And more than that she's not sure she could keep the door shut on Lucien if she wanted to. Not with the invisible thread that pulled her in his direction. Not when he sometimes looked at her like he could feel it too.
