Shane showed his phone to Ilya, who took it uninterested.
‘Oh it’s day where you can come to hockey training with your partner. Is way for Ottawa to support their players by caring about their family, or something.
Every couple forms team and they do little challenges on the ice. Best couple wins cup, I think. Is fun’
Shane tried not to sound too jealous as he asked: ‘Who are you going with?’
‘Nobody. Is fine. I have my team’
‘Yeah, but you also have a boyfriend’, Shane pointed out begrudgingly.
Or, the Ottawa Centaurs organise a WAGs Day but Shane knows that if he signs up to be Ilya’s teammate, they'll have to work hard to keep their secret. And to win that cup, of course.

Shane’s face fell.
‘Wait, are you leaving again?’‘Hollander-‘, Ilya said warningly but Shane interrupted him, either not hearing Ilya or choosing to ignore him.
‘No. We didn’t even kiss’, he whispers, avoiding eyecontact. Shane is staring at the floor, frowning, like he knows this is important somehow, but he forgot why.
Ilya freezes, very aware of the nurse standing behind them.
Or: Shane isn’t allowed to leave the hospital alone after getting a concussion. Surely one of his teammates could pick him up, but a drugged Shane only wants to go with Ilya.

Summary
It’s perhaps the sweetest Svetlana has ever known Ilyusha to be. She has always been granted access to the more affectionate side of Ilyusha, the one that he rarely shows to anyone else, but it was never anything compared to this. This tenderness, this adoration, that he gives so freely to Shane. It’s like her best friend is a completely different person right now, and she starts to wonder if maybe she was wrong earlier.
Maybe, instead of being too boring for Ilyusha, perhaps Shane Hollander is giving him the space to become something soft. Something without walls, or masks, or armour.
