It was never supposed to happen. He was never supposed to be here.
Despite all the plans he concocted, all the contingencies he committed to memory, Bruce could have never been prepared for this. What had started out as a Christmas party he'd been tricked into attending, and a night where he'd believed the hardest thing he'd have to deal with was Shayera killing Wally over Mario Kart, turned into an abundance of moments where Clark backed him into a verbal corner and made his heart want things it couldn't have.
Oh yeah, and then there was the time travel.
An attack by renegade, sentient light later, and Batman found himself on Krypton. Then in Jor-El's custody. And that somehow segued into him becoming a baby Kal-El's nanny by day, a man desperately trying to save Krypton by night.
This was why Bruce Wayne hated Christmas.

The Justice League has been around for years, not months. And there is another Batman, who wants more answers than Bruce is willing to give.

Slowly, Clark lowered his head, wordlessly prompting eye contact. Then, he raised a brow.
“What was I supposed to say?” Bruce asked archly in response. “‘Hello, mother, your untimely murder opened my eyes to the glaring flaws in Gotham’s criminal justice system, and in the decades since, I’ve gone out every night in a bat costume to perform acts of vigilantism through gratuitous application of incredible violence. Would you like more milk in your tea?’”
Martha Wayne is resurrected for a day. Clark is mostly here for moral support and to make sure Bruce doesn’t crawl out of his skin from sheer stress, but he certainly wouldn’t mind making a favorable first impression on one of the most influential women of his best friend’s life. He just hadn’t expected her to be so incisively observant, though he really, probably should have.

Clark was at home in Metropolis, in their shared apartment, waiting for his wife. Just a regular weekday. (No matter that it was a Saturday afternoon, pushing five o’clock. No reasonable CEO, unless they were trying to spin their way out of a scandal, would ever agree to be interviewed on the weekend. No matter. They needed a backdrop and this worked as well as any.) Clark lay on the couch that he and Lois had bought for seventy-eight dollars from a woman on Craigslist and listened intently to the conversation happening on the executive floor of the Wayne Enterprises skyscraper.
