Summary
Frodo fails.
The good people of Middle Earth succumb to the rule of the One Ring and its only master, Sauron. In his victory, he promises only a cruel decimation of the world as he reforges it in his image. Except, of course, his chief adversary needs to make things more complicated. Another bargain struck. An accord for a hand in marriage, in exchange for a fading chance to save Middle Earth from utter ruin.

“Please tell me you're saving the best for last.” Galadriel complained, once they were alone. The private rink her father had built for his children was cavernous and quiet, despite the natural light that reflected blindingly across the ice. The slightest sounds echoed from the high ceilings.
“Your next victim isn’t scheduled until ten.”
“Who?”
Elrond flipped over a page on his clipboard. “Oh, yes. Smith. Halbrand Smith.”
“Smith? Never heard of him.” Such a common, unremarkable name. Not like Noldor, which had come to mean something in the figure skating community. Something about Noldor and Smith as a pairs name made her nose crinkle in distaste.
“I guess I’m a little early.” A voice called from the far end of the building, near the back door no one ever used. She didn’t know how long he’d been sitting there, watching the show, but he crossed the length of the ice in a pair of hockey skates. A giant equipment bag slung over his shoulder as if it weighed nothing.

There is, however, one door that yet stands, though it too is choked over by vines. Its outline – a dark stone arch – just barely visible beneath the foliage, sits like the hunched back of some great sleeping beast. No matter where in her grove she rests she can always see it lurking there at the edge of her vision. She knows who waits on the other side. It has been many, many years since he last tried to gain entry, but he has always shown her a level of patience he extended to no other. She is not foolish enough to think that has changed.
It is to this private bower within herself that Galadriel retreats while she anticipates the arrival of the ring.
