Summary
Stiles deserved so much better than a life with Derek. He deserved so much more than anything Derek could offer him. He didn’t feel good enough for Stiles. He felt like Stiles was almost... settling. Like he could have much better, but because he was in this life, he needed to be with someone who was also in this life, and Derek was just... convenient.
Derek knew it wasn’t like that, and that Stiles would be devastated if he knew what he was thinking, but he couldn’t help it. He wanted so much more for Stiles than a life in Beacon Hills, fighting off the next monster of the week.
Stiles was brilliant, and a go-getter, and could really be something. He’d been going places, even back when he’d still been in high school. And what was he doing now? IT support for a company across the state.
Brilliant, dedicated, loyal, amazing Stiles was asking people questions like, “Did you try turning it off and on again?” on a daily basis.

“Nothing. It’s just nice. I like when the four of us come out together. Our little double dates,” she teased, stabbing her fork into a strawberry and putting it between her lips.
Stiles snorted at her comment, since this wasn’t a double date—he wished—but didn’t comment on it because he liked their outings, too. Even if he whined incessantly about it until he got there, it was always a good time.

Stiles and Derek’s Fuck Buddy Rules
1. This is about sex and nothing else. No personal attachments or emotions involved. If that changes, the fuck buddy relationship should be terminated as soon as possible to avoid one party getting hurt.
2. No kissing. Kissing is too intimate.
3. No sleepovers under any circumstances. If one party cannot get home, the other party will order an Uber for them.
4. No booty calls before 9pm. Texting is limited to booty calls only. No future plans should be made ever; they must always be spontaneous. If one party is unavailable or does not want a booty call, they do not owe the other party an explanation. A simple thumbs-down emoji will suffice.
5. Both parties can end the arrangement for any reason without explanation at any time. Both parties will delete the other’s phone number and cease all contact. As he grows up though, he ends up caring a great deal.

You meet up with your soulmate in dreams once or twice every year your whole life, giving you the chance to grow up together and befriend each other no matter where you live. The catch is you only remember what happens in those dreams if you’re currently in one, or if you meet in real life and you BOTH want to be with each other, meaning your waking lives carry on as they would have otherwise with you none the wiser as to whether or not you have a soulmate out there.
This leads to unexpected and wonderful tearful reunions between soulmates discovering each other in waking life, but if your waking selves don’t get along or have emotional constipation (cough, Geralt, cough cough) you and your soulmate can only watch helplessly from your dream meetings as your waking selves make things terrible for both of you without even realizing it.
(Created my own homebrew soulmate!au rules to get myself some solid logical worldbuilding where the characters still have to choose each other in the end, no matter what what destiny says.)
