Erwin has a dreadful feeling in the pit of his stomach watching his husband fly off. He lets him go and trusts that he'll be alright. However, Levi accidentally blows off his own legs with a thunderspear. Erwin holds the man in his arms during his last moments.

After the Suicide March, and continuing after Erwin's death, Levi is left alone, in a desolate world, where he feels as if the incidences that took place could have easily been avoided had he not encouraged Erwin, had he said something beforehand, had he given Erwin the serum. Levi searches for a way out, wanting desperately to end his pain, and guilt, and suffering, but then, an apparition appears; an apparition of the last man he would ever want to see.

Five years later, Levi is still struggling to come to terms with Erwin's death. He begins seeing Erwin's ghost, causing Levi to feel angry and heartbroken all at once. Not seeing the point in living any longer, Levi attempts to take his own life. Erwin stops him and inspires Levi to continue fighting.
