“If Colm wasn’t alive,” Arthur finally said, voice gone distant, “what would you want?”
“Breakfast." I smiled because it hurt less than telling the truth.
“After breakfast?"
“Clean hands that still know what to do,” I said, and the second smile surprised me more than the first. “A horse that likes me more than not. A little time where the only thing that needs killin’ is silence. No one callin’ me Miss anything.”
He nodded like he’d been handed a map that didn’t promise roads. “I could stand that."
“And you? If Dutch’s ‘one last score’ didn’t end with all of us in holes or heatstroke?”
“Quiet… a river with fish that ain’t clever. A place where a man can come inside without lookin’ over one shoulder and then the other. No parades. No letters.” He didn’t look at me when he said that, and I didn’t make him.
“You there, if you want,” he added, so bare it almost weren't words.
“I ain’t pretty company, Arthur."
“I ain’t either. We’ll make an ugly peace.”

Summary
Although she always believed that the estate hid something, she never thought it would be the creature her father had created years ago, living hidden within the walls, as her aunt joked. Nor did she think that her desire to find a husband or at least have a brother who understood her would be fulfilled, finding both figures in that creature.
