“If Colm wasn’t alive,” Arthur finally said, voice gone distant, “what would you want?”
“Breakfast." I smiled because it hurt less than telling the truth.
“After breakfast?"
“Clean hands that still know what to do,” I smiled again, surprising myself. “A horse that likes me more than not. A little time where the only thing that needs killin’ is silence. No one callin’ me Miss anything.”
He nodded like he’d been handed a map that didn’t promise roads. “I could stand that."
“And you?” I asked. “If Dutch’s ‘one last score’ didn’t end with all of us in holes or heatstroke?”
“Quiet." He sighed. “A river with fish that ain’t clever. A place where a man can come inside without lookin’ over one shoulder and then the other. No parades. No letters.” He didn’t look at me when he said that, and I didn’t make him.
“You there, if you want,” he added, so bare it almost wasn’t words.
“I ain’t pretty company, Arthur."
“I ain’t either,” he breathed. “We’ll make an ugly peace.”

Summary
In the aftermath of good fortune before the fall for the Van der Linde gang, Dutch finds himself split between the greed and yearning of another win and the promise of a life promised to his family. The city of Blackwater is ripe for the taking with a police force built for the town it used to be and a bank large enough to house the entirety of the federal dime, it is tempting to just follow instinct and rob it and the fortunate few blind of their boats and riches. But wins like this have yet to secure that dream of his. The one of safety and freedom he set forth to bring to his gang. The west promises all of that and more. But the dilemma lies in getting there in one piece, the trail to the west is filled with peril in Illness, animals, and men just like them out for blood. But Dutch had never once been considered rational to any sane man and once he sets his mind to something. There's no stopping it until all is said and still.

But Sadie feels helpless, she's too angry and wants nothing more than to kill her rapist. Charles and Eagle Flies receive death threats, and Charles is reminded how strong he is, except not strong enough to tell Arthur apparently.

At first, Arthur wanted nothing to do with John. He left on his own accord, he can go be wolf food for all he cared. Besides, cleaning up after that idiot was not his responsibility. But one look at Abigail crying, with her newborn baby in her arms, broke something in Arthur's heart. Next thing he knew, he was saddling up Boadicea and following John's trail.
Days later, his searching led him to the snowy Ambarino region. There he meets a beautiful fiery tempered woman who knows how to live off the land, and takes no crap from anyone. The moment she called him out for staring... he was already under her spell.

Right now all John could think about was the pain in his jaw, fever-bright and stinging, enough to leave him lying on his back on the floor for a moment. He turned his head and spat out a stream of blood, but a prod around his mouth with his tongue told him he wasn’t missing any teeth. “Nice to see you too.”
“You bastard.” Arthur was on him in an instant, grabbing John by the front of his coat and dragging him up off the floor, only to slam his back into the nearest wall. Several things fell off a nearby shelf and shattered, but thankfully John didn’t give a damn about any of them. “What the hell is wrong with you, huh?”
In the quiet, lonely moments, when John had envisioned a reunion with Arthur, he had always pictured the older man being angry–how could he not? John had left, abandoned the gang and a woman with a newborn, and as far as Arthur knew, he’d fucked off because he was afraid of being a father.
That was just about the furthest thing from the truth, but Arthur would never, ever know the truth.
Not if John was still breathing to keep it away from him.
(AKA the AU where John never came back to the gang after he "ran away"... and everything changes because of it.)
