Steve shifts his weight from foot to foot, looking embarrassed, but weirdly hopeful.
“And now you have radiation poisoning, Steve, and there’s gonna be consequences.” Danny’s head is a mess, his heart is worse. And he’s gesturing again. “And I want us to be together.”

Danny wants to get old with Steve, running a restaurant and watching the kids grow up. Steve wants the same thing, but it feels like the more he gets, the more he'll have to lose. This story will span their final months at Five-Oh, the development of their relationship, the ups and downs of running a restaurant, and Steve's eventual declining health.

Summary
Danny has been shooting him I’m going to attempt to make you talk, just you wait glances all day, so it’s not much of a surprise when there’s a knock at Steve’s door an hour after he gets home. In other ways, it’s a huge surprise. “Since when do you knock?” he asks Danny, who’s standing in front of him, still in the same clothes he wore at work and carrying a six-pack of Longboards.
Danny seems very convinced Steve has something to say. Steve is not entirely sure why (except for all the ways in which he is).

The first thing that assails Danny’s senses when he breaches the room is the smell. The stench is one he associates intimately with violence: a potent mix of human stench: blood, piss, shit and vomit, mixed with humidity, decay and mold, the whole ensemble amalgamated into a pungent miasma that only spells one thing in his mind: death.

People don’t seem to have too much trouble getting past the obvious assumption that two alpha males, one a Navy SEAL and one a tough Jersey detective -- with an ex-wife and daughter, no less -- are straight, work-only partners. But it amuses Steve, really, that there are so many lingering assumptions beyond the obvious.
