Summary
Merlin could barely think past his straining thoughts, conversations about magic always hurt, much less notice the unfriendly magic in the air. The ambient magic crawled under their skins, making each man pull closer to the fire. There were no stories to be shared tonight. Not tonight.
But magic has never really had the same effect on Merlin as it does on most. Magic meant to smother and drain instead drained away the muddled clouds filling his mind. The magic smothered hesitation. This magic loosened Merlin’s tongue on a silent day.
Merlin broke the unnatural quiet with a simple phrase that said far more than the stilted words. “He threatened to cut my tongue out.”

Summary
Standing right in front of the torn veil, Lancelot turns for a moment, smiling serenely at Merlin. Then, he faces the tear once more and, squaring his shoulders, steps forward. He spreads his arms, as if welcoming the nothingness, and his entire form flickers, as if seen through rippling water.
A shout is torn from Merlin’s throat, caught somewhere between an anguished “No!” and wordless horror. This was supposed to be Merlin’s destiny to bear, not Lancelot’s.
Without conscious thought, Merlin flings out a hand, his magic rushing towards the tear in the veil, which is already beginning to close.Day 3 - “what did you want once this was all over? tell me!” + protective!knights
