To get better, after all this time, after the years of, yes, embarrassment. She couldn’t seem to stop thinking about it ever since— that risk it took to blossom, and whether it was worth it. Alice was beginning to suspect that it was.
She tried her best not to think too hard about what that might mean. She tried even harder not to think about Gemma.

“Not so bad and tough now, are you, Coach?”
The question makes Alice freeze. It doesn’t take her more than an instant to realize that this isn’t the voice she should be hearing in a moment like this. Even though there’s that one small, primal part of her that wants to keep going. The realization sends a mountain of guilt straight to her stomach, forcing her to uncurl her hands and use them to push Gemma away from her.
Gemma leans back with furrowed brows. “What is it? Did I do something?”
Alice shakes her head, dropping her hands to her side. “No. You didn’t…” She swallows thickly. “We can’t do this.”
Gemma smirks, her eyes ablaze, and takes a tiny step forward. “Oh, I beg to differ. Seemed to be doing just fine a moment ago.”
Alice closes her eyes, dread setting in at what she’ll find when she opens them again. “I have a girlfriend.” She gives the moment a beat and then finally opens her eyes, her heart sinking immediately.
Gone is the desire from Gemma’s eyes, replaced with confusion, betrayal, and pure hurt. “You what?”

“I’ve always liked this weird vibe you have, but…” Gemma began, raising an eyebrow meaningfully as she pointed at her.
“Vibe? What vibe?” Alice scoffed, cutting her off.
“You know exactly what vibe. ‘I’m a sickly but kinda charming Victorian child.’”
“What?” Alice finally stopped moving. “That’s not true…”
“It is, you muppet. And I think at least ten people would back me up on that.” The corners of Gemma’s mouth curled into a smirk as she nodded toward the locker-room doors just behind her. “Want me to ask?”
“No,” Alice answered quickly.
“Even more people would probably agree that lately the sickly part has been a lot more noticeable than the charming part…” Gemma hesitated, biting her lip. “Alice…I’m starting to really worry about you. Please, tell me what’s going on. I’ll do whatever I can to help.”
(Or: Alice is newly single, sleep-deprived and if she doesn't find an apartment soon, she'll have to crash on Ted's couch. Gemma is losing her mind because Alice is ignoring her. And Lizzie... Lizzie is absolutely fed up with both of them.)

“Twenty quid,” Gemma interrupted. She felt her face going hot. “Whoever has the most matches. You’re on.”

“There,” she said, all matter-of-fact. She reached for Alice’s beer to take a sip, even though she had her own. “Now you’ll have two streaks.”
(Or, the one where a Snapchat debacle turns Alice’s life upside down when she tries to maintain a streak with her ex and with Gemma at the same time.)
