Once the room clears, Nick takes a deep breath. “So, half-term. How have your exams been going?”
“Can I suck you off?”
Charlie is patient as Nick does a double-take at his request, staggering back and knocking over a bottle of tequila. He sips his vodka lemonade and waits.
“What, er—now?!” Nick splutters.
“Why not?” He’s emboldened now. This loop is quickly becoming hell on earth, but maybe it doesn’t have to be, not all the time. There are no consequences for him in the loop. Anything he does is forgotten the next day. Nick could scream at him, punch him in the nose, do whatever he wants—tomorrow, he’ll still be here, serving him a vodka lemonade with a shy smile. What has he got to lose?

From the Scots word for ‘seal’, a selkie was a seal who could take on human form. A common element in all the selkie-folk tales, and perhaps the most important, is that in order to shapeshift, they had to cast off their sealskins. Within these magical skins lay the power to return to seal form, and therefore the sea. If this sealskin was lost, or stolen, the creature was doomed to remain in human form until it could be recovered.
