I wrote this because one--what the fuck was that ending?--and two, my hearts hurts when I think about the fact that Mike Wheeler was botched by his writers, and will stay closeted forever, dreaming of the life he had with the only people who ever understood him--the party, El, and most of all Will. It takes place in New York City, and it's 6-7 years later (I'm sorry). El is not going to be in this because I think her ending was open-ended and it's not really confirmed yet that she's alive (I believe she is, but I'm not going to write her in because how would she go ffrom Iceland or wherever she was to New York City with no identification?). Anyways, I hope you enjoy!

Summary
After the MAC-Z battle, Will is left recovering on the couch in the Squawk, El's and Dustin's crews are still M.I.A., and the kids of Hawkins are nowhere to be seen. Meanwhile, Mike is left with a storm of emotions that he doesn't really know how to deal with yet. As the Hawkins team prepare for the final battle, Mike and Will are finally forced to confront their feelings for each other.
tl;dr: mike wheeler is a cringefail loser, byler can't communicate for the life of them, and they both got it bad for each other. yeah just a standard post-vol 1 fic

By the time he noticed he was running, he was already by Will’s side. He cradled his shoulders from behind, not allowing the boy’s head to hit the floor. He brushed Will's bangs to the side, feeling the layer of sweat that laced his forehead. He smelled of dirty water, covered in the grime from the broken pipe they had tried to fix less than fifteen minutes ago. Despite not being the one to use dormant superpowers for the first time, Mike was breathing harder than Will. He could feel the air rise in the back of his throat and plummet to the bottom of his chest. Will’s breaths were more shallow, forced.
