“Hello love,” Rebecca murmured, injecting as much love and warmth into her smile as she could muster this early. “Everything alright?”
Ted gingerly perched himself on the bed beside her but instead of answering her question, drew in a deep and shaky breath. At this proximity she could see the fine tremors in his frame, could take in the way his hands had lost the battle and given in to rhythmic clenching and unclenching.
“Can we talk?”
Well, as if that wasn’t an ominous start to the conversation.

Summary
Ted barely registers Trent’s groggy, “Mm? Ted?”
“Trent, someone’s in here,” Ted says, too quickly. He wonders if he’s even coherent.
Trent barely manages, “What?” before he’s sitting up, running his hand through his hair. Ted feels the bed creak as he moves, weight shifting; he grasps for the bat, cursing as he can’t find it, in the moment before he hears Trent gasp out, “No—” in a rush.
The floorboards groan under the heavy footfalls of the intruder as he shifts and finally moves, lunging closer to them. Ted’s still scrambling for the bat; Trent is the one who is up and moving in a second, jerking across the bed, putting himself between the stranger and Ted without a heartbeat of hesitation.
Ted feels the impact in Trent’s body. He doesn’t see it.
or: someone breaks into ted and trent's home in the middle of the night, intent on hurting ted. trent makes sure they don't even get a chance to touch him.

Beard didn’t believe for a single second, that everything was alright, not anymore. His stomach turned. He recognized how Ted was fishing for every single excuse he could find to avoid asking for whatever it was he needed. Beard knew that admitting that he was at Jane’s, that he was busy, would mean Ted excusing himself and hanging up in an instant. Beard felt he couldn’t quite bear the uncertainties of the whole thing anymore. He sighed, at last.
“What’s going on, Ted?” The way that Ted sounded like he was choking on a sob damn near broke Beard’s heart.
“I need you to come get me, I’m…” Ted spoke quietly, struggling to continue. Beard stood up immediately.
“Where are you?”
“I’m alright, I’m okay. I’m… I’m at the E-... At A&E. They won’t let me go home by myself, so I just… I just need you to come and get me.”
