The demon is looking at you like you’re going to kill him. Or like he’s about ready to try to kill you. He’s an ugly one, one of them that doesn’t resemble a person much at all beyond his general shape. Deathly pale skin covered in thick, night-sky blue stripes, close-shorn hair, and huge, unblinking eyes with sclera like shattered glass. He’s not very big, but the way he’s hunched in the corner isn’t from fear. That’s pure tension.
What you read in the paperwork was horrifying. This demon is from a fight ring— one of the worst known yet. The conditions there were so brutal that they’d been shut down in a second, no chance to defend the brawls.

Summary
The places where demons fight aren’t meant for anyone to come out alive. They’re not supposed to happen. The kinds of brutal, tearing each other to shreds brawls that go down in fight rings are deemed inhumane by even the species that owns them like property. But, so long as the owner keeps quiet enough, no one will stop them. No one will shut it down.
Sanemi’s body is covered in scars. He can hardly remember a time when it wasn’t. He hurts, hurts, hurts more often than not, but he’s gotten so used to it that the absence of pain is almost worse than its presence. Pain is comforting, in a way. It means he survived. It means he’s still alive.

Pet Au. Sanemi is rescued from a fight ring and has to deal with the realities of a more normal life.

The first thing you’re expecting is that you’ve got stupid kids playing some kind of prank or starting trouble, so you storm into the barn in a huff, ready to catch a teenager crawling into somewhere he shouldn’t. You slam the door open and adjust your grip on your shovel, thoroughly ready to be scary.
But instead of some dumb kid, the muddy footprints lead back into the darkest part of the barn, where there aren’t any windows. You flick on the lights... and hear a quiet whine from deep in the back corner. That’s. Not normal. And definitely not the sound of a malicious trespasser.
“Alright, who’s in here?” you call out into the still air. “Better come out now. You’re on my land, you know, and trespassing isn’t welcome.”
No answer. Fine. You’ll go find out who it is on your own.
