    Summary

    Armand shifts his weight onto one leg and leans into Daniel’s chest, looks over his own shoulder at the camera. Lestat's pupils dilate while he takes the photo.

    “Was I in frame?” Daniel asks him.

    “He's climbing you,” Lestat says. “Yes, you were in frame.”

    They look okay, in the glimpse Lestat gives him before he sends it. Daniel is presentable from his stupid schmoozy networking drinks, and Armand looks how Armand always looks. Composition is lacking, obviously, Lestat is not the resident hobbyist photographer, but Louis is forgiving about that kind of thing.

    “The little dots,” Lestat announces. “He says - he says he'd like an after photo as well, if it's not too much trouble.”

    In mathematics, a set is a well-defined collection of objects. These objects are called the elements of the set. Set B is a subset of set A if all elements of B are also elements of A; A is then a superset of B.

    A = {armand, daniel, lestat, louis}
    B = {daniel, lestat} • {armand, louis} • {armand, lestat} • {daniel, louis} • {armand, daniel} • {lestat, louis} • {armand, daniel, lestat}

    Summary

    It’s too much—the burden of keeping everyone in his party alive, let alone happy. It’s too much—the pressure to stay cool and calm in his leadership position despite the fact that he’s as overwhelmed as the rest of them. The truth is, he’s winging this whole thing.

    Rook needs a distraction, something stupid and needlessly convoluted to occupy his time when he’s not trying desperately to save the world.

    Rook sets about teaching Manfred a secret handshake.

    Summary

    "I know what a breakup looks like," Daniel says. "The better question is, why are you coming to me about it? I'm the one who broke up your little sham."

    "This is what humans do, don't they?" Armand asks, letting his voice drop. "Crashing on their friends' couches when there's a blip in their romances?"

    "Except we're not friends. We're actually very much not friends." Daniel shrugs, as if it's all the same to him. "And I can't imagine the great vampire Armand deigning himself to sleep on my fucked-up sofa. That thing's been here since the nineties."

    "Well," Armand only says. "I saw you have a guest bedroom."

    Summary

    Daniel is sprawled out across the bed, loose-limbed and lazy, somehow filling all the open space it has to offer and leaving Armand to nestle into the gaps. His cheeks are flushed, blood pooling like it knows what comes next. Maybe it does. Armand was reading about classical conditioning the other day. About dogs who become accustomed to getting food when their handler rings a bell.

    Perhaps Daniel is the dog, Armand’s teeth sharp bells reverberating in his veins. Or perhaps Armand is the dog, Daniel’s blood a song rattling in his ears. He has been a dog before. He runs his tongue along the bow of Daniel’s collarbone, gathers the salt-sweat there and imagines what it tastes like because Daniel does.

    Armand remembers he loved Daniel, once, and that Daniel loved him. Or a version of them did, at least. It isn't his intention to go back to that, but it's not not his intention, either. Such is the prerogative of an immortal: to hold two contradicting desires simultaneously. If nothing else, it passes the time while he waits for this miserable interview to end.
