Stiles gripped the steering wheel more tightly as he passed over the state line into California.
Four years. In a few short hours, he would be back in Beacon Hills. Home. For the first time in almost four years. For so long he had refused to let himself think of it, of what he had left behind there, of who he had left behind. He had almost given up on ever seeing them again.
A quiet whimper from the back seat made him wince, and with a glance in the rearview mirror he took a deep breath and felt the tension in his shoulders ease incrementally.
As his heart rate began to even out, he felt his eyes start to droop. He was so tired. Twenty hours straight with only a few short stops to refuel. He could feel an adrenaline crash beginning to creep up on him. Just a few more hours and they would be safe. He glanced once more at the back seat and the identical dark heads sleeping quietly in the back seat.
