Eddie manages to get through the atrocious breakfast and pull himself together as they pack, letting Buck rattle off a string of facts he knows even while laughably hung over, and Eddie pretends like his life isn’t falling apart; held together only by a dingy piece of fake jewellery sitting on his left finger, burning into his skin as a reminder of something beautiful yet unattainable.
Maybe he can keep the ring as a reminder. Like a desperate puppy keeping scraps of an old broken toy.
Or Eddie and Buck drunkenly get married in Vegas and then Eddie gets bronchitis. Naturally this means they realise they are in love with each other.

“No getting out of it now.” Bobby’s steady voice makes him flinch.
“We literally haven’t moved.”
“You could run,” Bobby says with a shrug. “But then you’d have to deal with Athena.” He steps into the RV.
Turning around, Buck sees Athena standing at the doorway, her hand still in the air. When she catches his eye, something in her expression shifts. He’s seen that expression before. Typically, she uses it on people who are about to flee arrest.

Buck was woken by the incessant buzzing of his phone a mere couple of hours after he got off his shift.
As he reached for his phone he went through the list of people that could be trying to contact him so badly right after a shift. His first thought was that it was Eddie, but they hadn’t talked since he told the team he was leaving the 118 during the Christmas party and it was now February. It could have been Christopher, texting or Facetiming as they had been often, but he should be at school. His next thought was that it was Maddie, but she was still not picking up his calls. He thought maybe Taylor, but they had run into each other as he got back this morning and she knew he had been planning on sleeping and she was working all day. None of them were viable candidates for who was texting him, but they still were all more likely than the name he saw on his screen.
