"Well? Are you going to help me or not?"
Robert eyes the door, then rolls his gaze back to her. She can't tell if he's thinking about it or just calculating the likelihood of other people traipsing through. There's not one room in this whole building that's truly private - Courtney makes sure of it.
"Fine, I'll take a look,” he finally agrees. “But for the record, this is definitely in the top five weirdest ways someone's asked me to touch their boobs.”

What's left behind, in no particular order:
Ten garbage bags of clothes destined for Goodwill.
A school-recommended grief counsellor who smells of cigarettes.
A burning desire to put emergency medicine to rights.
Loneliness (not to be talked about in polite company).
And a jar of olives. -

But then again, he’s the one out here years later, 18 floors between him and the warzone he comes back to again and again, sitting next to a woman as smart and beautiful as anyone he’s ever met and thinking about a quote by George Eliot he read in one of those beat-up waiting room books - that it’s never too late to be what you might have been. So what the hell. Maybe that OT was onto something after all.

Summary
There’s a weird feeling hiding between the hangers as Samira picks apart her wardrobe. A layered, scratchy sort of disappointment.
It’s got nothing to do with her plans, of course. She's been looking forward to this date all week.
Abbot just made those case reports sound really interesting.

5 times Samira's date ends at the PTMC + 1 time it starts there

Summary
Samira looks at Robby and sees a father figure. Robby looks at her and sees himself. Jack Abbot sees them both so clearly.
--
She can hear her college roommate’s voice in her head. “That sounds like a textbook case of daddy issues.” Which isn’t entirely wrong. Like many young women with unresolved father-shaped wounds, she has a tendency to imprint onto older men.
It would be less weird if Samira wanted to fuck Robby.
What she wants is so much worse.
And yet it feels just as inappropriate to imagine. He’s her boss. Her abandonment issues and aching loneliness should be checked at the door when she walks into work because she’s twenty-seven years old and this is a fucking emergency room.
And yet. It doesn’t stop her from wanting.

Summary
When she'd gone to Robby, she wonders whether he'd been able to smell the desperation buried beneath her hesitance, the overwhelming stench of decaying need giving itself away. Believe me, believe me, believe me. It's all she'd ever wanted. Maybe no one had to die this time.
Or: Trinity Santos rediscovers the meaning of team.

Summary
He learns early on that there are different versions of her depending on the situation. Some are obvious. V with a drop of someone else’s blood smeared on her cheek. Valerie asleep in his bed, rolled up into a ball with her mouth slightly open. There’s a third he’s been noticing, someone he can’t name, more brash than V, less open than Valerie. Less comfortable than Valerie and more reckless than V. Rude, almost.
When she comes to his house and sits on the porch with her legs up on the table and a lit cigarette dangling from her lips, he knows that mysterious third is here but he doesn’t know what to call it.

Summary
"What are you going to do?" Bradley asks her, worrying the lip of his coffee cup until it starts to unroll. He knows Phoenix likes time, space. That she needs to decompress before seeing her family post-deployment. This time more than any other, probably.
She shrugs. "Belize, I think."
He turns, surprised, and winces when it wrenches his neck. Everything fucking hurts all the time. He doesn't know how she punched out and then flew the mission. She's un-fucking-real.
"I booked a place for a few weeks. It's on the water. Figured I'd, you know." She gestures vaguely, something Bradley understands to mean 'get my head right.' "You could come."
