Vi wakes alone in bed. The cold sheets and empty spot beside her come crashing down, and for a moment she lays where she is and tries to remember how to breathe. Her body throbs with the memory of the night before, a dull ache in her lower back and a sticky mess still between her thighs. Tears prick her eyes before she can roll over and check for Sevika's clothes — and then she hears clattering and swearing from the kitchen.

The words are bitten out between grit teeth, frost accompanying them in a puff of breath Vi had been holding. Sevika freezes along with it. Her gaze skitters to the noise behind her, then back to Vi, something a little wild in them. Vi recognizes it from the moments before Sevika had thrown her into a wall in their first fight when she'd broken out of prison.
