"I wish" Alastor whispered, so cold that the air between them seemed to freeze "that you hadn't fallen in love with me. That you didn't love me."
Vox opened his mouth. To say something. To cry, perhaps. To ask him not to say that.
But Alastor continued, and his fingers trembled slightly against the other's skin.
"So I wouldn't have to deal with your pathetic obsession."

"How long have you known this new friend, Vox?" Al asked, not even looking at Dante, as if he didn't exist. His voice was soft, with a hint of amusement, and his fingers brushed the rim of his glass before bringing it to his lips.
Vox smiled, playing with his own glass, moving it in slow circles on the table.
"For a few weeks," he replied, his tone light, almost distracted.
Dante felt a flare of heat in his chest. He slammed his glass against the table with a dull thud, making the whisky splash.
"I'm not his friend," he said, his voice firm, his eyes fixed on Vox's. "We're dating."
Al finally looked at him. Those red eyes, bright as rubies, settled on him with an intensity that made Dante shiver. And then, his smile widened, showing slightly too-sharp teeth.
"Really?" Al asked, his tone one of feigned surprise, almost theatrical. "Vox, darling, you didn't mention it."

“The babies,” Vox interrupted, and his voice had a tremor that made Alastor tense every muscle in his body. “Al, the babies…”
Alastor stood quickly, his shadows expanding in every direction, already scanning for weak points in the tower’s defenses, for the face of any demon who had dared approach his family. His mind calculated, planned and killed.
“What’s wrong with them? What’s happening?”
Vox looked at him from the bed, his eyes shining with an intensity that Alastor, in his state of high alert, took one second too long to interpret.
It wasn’t pain. It wasn’t fear.
It was something simpler.
“They want chocolate with cheese,” Vox said, and his voice was a mix of urgency and pleading that brooked no argument. “Right now, Al. The babies are craving chocolate with cheese.”

A thin line of irritation formed on Alastor's smile. He sat up, letting the sheets fall to his waist, and scanned the room. Vox didn't seem to be in the bathroom, nor on the sofa, nor wandering curiously around the room as he had done the night before.
On the nightstand, propped against an oil lamp, was a note. It was written in impeccable, almost arrogant handwriting, on white paper.
Alastor picked it up with two fingers, reading the words aloud, his voice a distorted, cold murmur.
"Thank you for the night. It was a pleasure meeting you"
His smile froze. "It was a pleasure meeting you"?
Was that how he said goodbye to him? As if it had been a casual date, a one-night stand of no importance? As if he didn't plan to ever see him again? Alastor squeezed the paper between his fingers, crumpling it slowly.
