Summary
After Sozin’s Comet, the Fire Nation sealed its borders with Katara and a wounded Zuko trapped inside. The rest of the world assumed he was dead, she was lost, and there was nothing left to do but mourn them. Five years later, the Fire Nation is rebuilding and the borders are finally open again.
But peace means very little to the children still waiting for medicine or to the people who are running out of patience. And none of them - not Zuko or Katara or Aang - are the people they were when the Fire Lord fell. Sooner or later they'll all have to face the choices they've made, what they owe to the people they couldn't save, and whether a love born in a cage can survive outside it.
The war is over. The revolution has just begun.

Post-canon Zutara with realistic politics. Explicit eventually.

Summary
After the lightning, when the blue glow of Katara’s healing is filling the courtyard, Zuko leans up and does what he has wanted to do for months. And when his mouth presses against hers, Katara does what she has wanted to do for even longer, and she kisses him back.
It is steps from where generations of Fire Lords had been crowned that their destinies twist, bend, and tie together in a knot that half of the world will try to undo, without success.

OR:
Zuko and Katara kiss on the day of the comet.
Which is when the problems start.
Can grimdark also be a romance? That’s a firm “maybe.”

Sun and moon meeting, she recalls from the poem, lovers brushing past, passed, paths—
Master Katara leans closer, standing on tiptoes, whispers something into the Fire Lord’s ears. Fire Lord Zuko grins, wide and sweet like a crescent moon. Shula watches a spring blossom softly land between them, like a nudge from the spirits, an answer, a call—like an inevitable, breathing thing, already sewn into the crevasses of their souls, already tied into the beats of their pulse.

Summary
This was just… convenient. Maybe a symptom of avoidant behavior to ward off the prospect of a real relationship, genuine vulnerability. An immature indulgence unbecoming of a Fire Lord and one of his appointed ambassadors-slash-childhood enemy-slash-friend. A perverse method of self-preservation.
A dry bark of a laugh is scraped from her throat.
Didn’t feel much like she was preserving anything.

Summary
She promised herself she would love Aang as deeply as her heart was capable. She would offer him all the devotion she had once yearned to give to another. But that other man had rejected her. He had handed her over to Aang. And now, she loathed the fact that only within his embrace did she finally feel happy.
This story was born from the gaps the feature film left behind: Zuko’s vanished lightning scar, the silence between him and Katara, and everything that might have happened before they reached that point.

“The Fire Lord proposes a marriage between his son, Crown Prince Zuko, and Princess Katara,” Iroh said, turning to face her.
If she wasn’t already sitting, she would have collapsed given how light headed she was at his words. Her mouth went dry. Her fingers went numb. A marriage? To the Fire Lord’s son?

Summary
"The first time Katara saw the grey, ashen snow was at the fateful attack that took her mother's life and spurred her hatred for the Fire Nation.
The Nation that took, and took, and kept on taking. What else would they take?
She doesn't know the answer, truly. For the third time in her life, she sees the snow again — the snow that predicts impending doom.
“Wonderful. Then, we want a marriage contract between Princess Katara—” Katara doesn't miss the way she says princess mockingly, “—And crown Prince Zuko.”
Her whole body freezes.
Did she hear that right?
Katara’s eyes widen and everything goes silent. Her heart thuds violently in her chest, blood rushing to her ears. She can't see, can't hear, can't think—
There was no way—
She couldn't, and wouldn't marry Zuko.
She surmises the snow really does bring impending doom, in one way or another. Maybe it's a sign of how her future marriage to Zuko will be — doomed."

Katara arrives with the weight of the past in her chest. She tells herself it’s just for one night, one reunion, nothing more. But as the day stretches into night, every glance across the room feels like history catching flame.
Over the course of a single night, old loves will resurface, jealousies will sting, and the weight of the years will press against the present. By dawn, the villa will burn, but before the first ember falls, Katara and Zuko will have to face what has always lingered between them; the fire they can no longer bury. And by sunrise, nothing between them will ever be the same.
Because Ember Island doesn’t just reveal who you are.
It reminds you of who you’ve always been. -

Summary
MOVIE SPOILERS DL;DR
The haunting loneliness no longer subsides by Katara's side in Republic City, nor with the non-benders at the Air temples, not like it always had. Every waking moment Aang can spare, he is remapping lost Airbender settlements and recuperating ancient relics. Each time foolishly hoping it will be enough to fill the gaping maw in soul.
In recent years, he travels to the Fire Nation after each bad trip instead of Yu Dao. As a world leader, one also intrinsically tied to the genocide of his people, Aang feels Zuko is only peer he has that can understand his crushing obligations, especially towards the restoration of the Air nation.
The Gaang grow worried about Aang's increasingly desperate obsession, none more so than Katara. It unsettles a deep fear of what it means for their hollowing relationship and for the world. When Aang finds one of the last remnants of his people, her fear only cements deeper.
aka the movie if the Gaang were given an actual role and make it Zutara.

“I need to go to Ba Sing Se.” Her determination was followed by a heavy silence of contemplation from Zuko and Iroh as they exchanged indecipherable looks with one another, Katara felt the need to elaborate. “I don’t… know how to get there.”
After the disaster of a showdown with Azula, Katara is separated from her friends and brother, stranded alongside none other than Fire Prince Zuko and his uncle. Left with little choice, she reluctantly agrees to an alliance of convenience proposed by Iroh; they’ll travel to Ba Sing Se together—giving Katara the opportunity to search for her friends, while they start anew as civilians in the city. Now, with old enemies turned allies by her side, she must make her way to the Impenetrable City— where she knows the Gaang will ultimately arrive.
Building a life for herself at Ba Sing Se is hard enough, being fake-married to Zuko is infinitely harder.
