Summary
Contrary to popular belief, Jack actually knew when to keep his mouth shut. Knew when that was the better option than giving voice to whatever thought came to his mind. That was the excuse, at least, that he was going to use if someone ever asked him why his mouth suddenly went as dry as the Texas dirt he was instantly transported back to when he realized that the shape he was trying so hard to distinguish was a bullwhip. And it was slowly being unfurled.

"What would you do without me?" Jack asked, taking advantage of Mac's helmet still being off and ruffling a hand through blonde hair, sweaty and caked with dust.
Mac ducked away from Jack's hand, laughing at the lighthearted teasing until he remembered the upcoming deadline of Jack's tour ending and his eyes darkened, protective walls quickly rebuilding faster than Jack could tear them down. "A little over a week," He said, choosing his words carefully as he moved, increasing the space between them until he was practically leaning against his door. "And I guess we'll find out."

"We missed our exfil," Mac sighed, adding a block of wood to the flickering start he had finally gotten going and turning around, pulling off his dripping wet coat and the flannel beneath it and spreading them, along with Jack's, out on the floor to begin drying. "That was supposed to take us home from a mission we weren't even supposed to be on in the first place. It's pouring rain, and you're stuck spending your birthday in some cabin straight out of Wrong Turn, with the only gift you got being the stab wound those guys left you with. Tell me, how is any of that alright?"
"Well now, I told you I didn't need anything big this year," Jack began, answering Mac's rhetorical question. "I just wanted to spend it with my kids. And you're here, so technically that part has been a success."
