When Jonah gets in trouble at school, Carlos is called to meet the principal, who seems more flustered by him than he is about picking up his kid from the principal's office.

“Well, before we continue, I just have to ask…” She tilts her head, trying for effortless and playful. “Is there a Mrs. Strand Reyes?”
Carlos straightens in his chair, brow furrowing again, clearly confused by the direction in which this conversation is going.
“…No?”
Principal Hargrove lets out a little laugh.
“That’s too bad,” she says, voice slipping into what she thinks is a flirty tone. “I’m, um… I’m single too. Nobody’s ever had the cajones to try.” She actually sings the last part, dropping her voice into a low baritone and wiggling her eyebrows while pointing at her bare ring finger.
Carlos blinks.
Then he calmly lifts his left hand from Jonah’s shoulder, revealing the shiny gold band on his own ring finger.
“There is a Mr. Strand Reyes,” he says matter-of-factly.
Principal Hargrove’s eyes go saucer-wide. She actually hears the hollow thunk of the Windows crash error sound as her brain freezes. The system needs a reboot.
“Oh.”

TK was happier than he'd been in months. But he hated the fatigue, the weakness.
It wasn't that feeling weak and tired was a totally new experience for him- he had been in recovery for one thing or another enough times before- but it didn't make the frustration of dealing with a body that just wouldn't cooperate any easier.
And now even something as simple as taking a shower felt like climbing Mount Everest.

“We were between Honduras and the tip of Mexico when we went down.” He draws an X in the dirt. The area of the ocean that Carlos gestures to with his stick seems so miniscule, but TK knows it’s likely thousands of square miles. “We may have gotten slightly off course when we lost control, but yeah,” he slides his foot over the picture, effectively wiping it away. “It’s a start.”
His eyes are stormy and his brow is furrowed. TK wants to smooth it out with his thumb, he wants to wash the dirt off his neck and ask him why he looks like he’s holding the weight of the world on his shoulders, but all he can do is nod and hope the rescue team can find them as easily as the map made it seem.

It’s all TK types before shoving his phone back in his pocket, before his dad starts making a speech, before he looks over at Nancy who looks like she’s seen a ghost.
He can hear his phone buzz in his pocket but he stands still looking at the back of the ambulance knowing that he’s going to have to clean the blood off all the equipment. He couldn’t stop looking at Nancy on the ride back, the small little splatters that rested on her cheek like a freckle, or the way that he watched her try and stop her hands from shaking, or how irritated her ear was because she kept trying to use her shoulder against it like it would help the ringing stop.

He felt so stupid, asking for honesty, then made speechless when faced with it, all words abandoning him, turning him statuary still and useless, so useless.
He thinks he had no true idea of what this actually meant for TK, of what this struggle entailed, all its nuances and cruel voices.
He didn’t know of a hand capable of taking everything away, left wishing for happiness as if you never felt it at all.
He thinks he does now, a bit better, in ways he didn’t expect to. Doesn’t make it easier, and he feels foolish he ever considered it would.
It just makes keeping his foot on the gas, taking him away from it, from the memory of its claws deep into TK, much, much more difficult.
A 3x13 coda in which Carlos has a conversation with a friend, puts his heart to rest, and learns that walking away does not mean surrender.

Carlos leaves plates on the nightstand. An apple left in the mornings, noddle dishes come noon, and take out for dinner. He comes and goes like clockwork, letting TK know time is still somehow moving on even without them.
