Summary
Aventurine is known as a difficult skater to work with. He's pushy, argumentative, and a self-proclaimed slacker. He has rushed through a series of coaches, none lasting more than a month, as he either gets tired of them or they give up on him and his tendency to mouth off. Next in this long line is one Veritas Ratio, who has his own difficult reputation to wrestle with. Known as strict and impossible to please, Ratio always gets his way in the end. As Aventurine runs out of potential coaching options, their two skating worlds finally meet while Aventurine struggles to pass this final level: the Gold Singles Test.

“I would see you happy,” Ratio says, eyes forward. Knuckles white on the umbrella.
Aventurine turns toward him. The sharp line of his jaw. The waves in his hair. “You don’t know what you seem to think you know.”

Summary
“Well, now I’m here, doc,” Aventurine says, nonchalantly, as he pushes his shades up the bridge of his nose.
“I can see it,” he says, his eyes not leaving Aventurine’s.
“Getting cold feet?” Aventurine asks, ignoring what he perceived as a jab and forcing his lips into a wider smile. “This isn’t your scene, after all.”
“Quit wasting both of our time. As I said before, we’re already behind schedule,” Ratio says, not even considering his words. “Let’s go.”
“Oh, c’mon, doc!” he exclaims, tiptoeing to lean over Ratio’s ear, invading his space and laying a hand over Ratio’s chest, “you’ll have to do better than this, if you want anyone to believe we’re dating.”
“No need to remind me,” Ratio says, catching Aventurine’s stray hand and pushing it away. “I’ll play my part, worry for yourself.”

Summary
Bets are, by their nature, Veritas Ratio's worst enemies.
Risking a high value on something that could, most likely, cause irreparable damage is nothing more than madness in the eyes of the mathematician. There is no logic, there is no explanation. Ratio didn't understand the impulse to gamble.
Coming from Aventurine, it was to be expected that he would try another of his tricks, as it was customary to try to drag him to the table. What I didn't know, however, was that the current bet had no physical value. What was in the game was immaterial, emotional, personal.

Alhaitham tightened his grip on his sword at the mention of his name. Nahida had assured the palace was vacant and that not a soul knew he would be arriving today.
"Who are you and why are you here." Alhaitham demanded.
The man's expression did not change. His mouth slightly agape in confusion and suprise. His hands were resting behind his back in a relaxed posture. He did not seem afraid, nor threatened in the slightest. After a heartbeat or two his shoulders slouched down slightly and he steadily replied;
"My name is Kaveh."

After numerous assassination attempts Alhaitham is forced to temporarily move. He soon finds that the Palace he believed to be vacant is keeping a man, waiting to be discovered, hostage. A man that could uncover why Alhaitham is incomplete.
