Sometimes, all it takes for the world to change...is a little timing. Suppose GUN found out that Gerald was jerking them around a little earlier, when Shadow wasn't as grown/developed? Suppose his escape pod was just damaged enough that GUN never found him, in all those years? What might he become, without Gerald's manipulations? What might he feel, younger and still bereaved? And what might he decide, in a little house by Never Lake, with the person who found him instead?
A look into how things might have gone for Shadow, if the worst day of his life hadn't been followed by GUN and Gerald each trying to outdo it. Rated T due to Maria's final moments, realistically described, and for references to emotional/psych abuse by Gerald to keep his medical experiment compliant.

Summary
Tails has been feeling strange lately, and has asked Amy for help. It turns out, those feelings were gender dysphoria, and Tails is a girl.
This story is some part wish fulfillment, some part me mapping out my own personal exploration of gender, probably some part pity party- or just working through negative emotions in a controlled way. Tails' experiences are somewhat based on my own, and to that point (but not necessarily any further), I am transposing myself onto them.

Summary
Tails the Fox has grown up into his early twenties. The days of battling Eggman felt like a distant memory. Things should be well then, right?
Not quite.
Tails' formative years after the victory against Eggman have not been kind. He hates how he looks, he no longer fits in Sonic and Amy's lives, and the loneliness is starting to bother him. He attempts to remedy this the way he knows how: by inventing a biomanipulator. Things do not go as planned, and what was supposed to heal his "damaged" mind, has transformed "him" into a "her" instead. The darkness in her own soul follows her relentlessly as she scrambles to make sense of what she wants and what she deserves.
Ideally this updates frequently.
