Byleth froze, emerald eyes going as wide as a startled deer’s. Fearless on the battlefield, helpless against a stupid flirtation—he wouldn’t last a day in Enbarr. They'd eat him alive.
Before he could say as much, however, Byleth’s hand was cupping the back of his, lifting it up from the table. He leaned in, and Linhardt finally caught a mischievous spark in his eye as he lowered his head to hover his lips over Linhardt’s palm. The brush of his lips was only that—Linhardt felt the exhale of his breath more than the kiss itself. Another followed, just above the cuff of his sleeve.

Of course you notice him, and of course as you’re standing there taking all of this in you’re also taking in long legs and blue eyes and that accent, and of course you think hmm, this Arlo fella sure is easy on the eyes. You notice, but you just file that information away in the back of your head for now because you have more important things to deal with.

This is placed after Edelgard declares war and Lady Rhea and Byleth are missing. Five years have passed before the news of the professor's survival finds Linhardt's ears. Whispers of the Alliance leader, Claude, and his friends nearing the borders of their countries had Linhardt recalling the promise they had made five years ago.
