Summary
For a long time, he thought that it was Bonnet who would be the death of Blackbeard, but it turned out that it was both of them. Neither gave Ed what he needed and, too focused on their own insecurities, they both failed him in the end. Bonnet by abandoning him, and Izzy by trying to force him out of his despair.
Maybe neither of them could have helped Ed before resolving their own problems. Each of them had their own demons to deal with, and they were all destined to collide at this critical moment in time. Maybe one broken man just cannot help another. -

Their friendship was built on trust, loyalty, and shared experiences, forged through countless battles, through fighting for each other's lives, through weathering storms both literal and metaphorical. “We never shoulda left the ship.” Ed lowers his head to Izzy’s chest. “This kinda shit never happens on the ocean.”
At the sound of Izzy’s shallow breathing, his heart beating weakly, Ed can’t hold back.
“I haven’t…” his voice cracks, “given you permission to leave me–”“Woah, easy now.” Jack grips the belt of Ed’s leathers like a horse’s reins, maneuvering him out of the way. Leaning down to scoop Izzy up like a sleeping child, his injured hand hangs loose and inflamed between them.
“This little cunt’s made o’ venom,” Jack says, standing impossibly tall and golden in his fringed suede. “A squirt more ain’t gonna do him no harm. So quit your damn balling and get.”

Or, Izzy will suffer anything to ensure Ed's happiness. Even camping with his least favourite person. What he won't abide is his Captain's life at risk. So after too long keeping a secret, Izzy finally has the leverage to force Calico Jack out of their lives.
