Four years later, Steve's car breaks down in the middle of nowhere California. The mechanic at the closest shop has blue eyes and blond hair… and a name tag that says Billy Hargrove.
*****"I watched him die." Steve barely got the words out. "I thought Billy DIED. I loved him and then I lost him, but you pulled him from Starcourt and had him alive all this time? Why doesn't he remember me?"
"We erased his memories." Dr. Owens explained. "We rewrote the last few years of his life and gave Billy a chance at a decent life."
"Without me." Steve said numbly. "A life without me. I loved him."
"If you love him, then leave." Owens stated. "You being here might trigger real memories and the mental trauma could--"
"I can't say goodbye to Billy again." he whispered. "I-- I won't."
"You're making a mistake."
"Stay away from us." Steve stepped away from the doctor. "I'm not losing Billy again, so stay the hell away."

In his lap, cupped hands are clasped to keep the tiny little thing inside the hollow nook he’s created with his fingers.
The little monster flutters and tickles his palms with its feathered wings.
Billy holds his hands to his chest for a moment, gives his heart some time to stop it’s rapid beating, and leans his head against the wall, staring at that dotted popcorn ceiling. It takes a while but finally the frantic flutters still inside his palms. Carefully, so very carefully to avoid having him give chase once more to the tiny terror, Billy moves his thumbs to the side just enough, barely the space of a keyhole, to have a peek inside.

Woo girls over with ease. Sweet-talk them into his bed. He leaned against the kitchen island, phone clenched in-hand and waited. Listened to the tonal ring — ring.
And tried not to think about his breakup with Nancy.
Nerves bunched in his throat. So when the phone finally picked up, Steve just -
Started talking.
“Hey, Veronica.” Steve said. “I - Uh - Found your ad in an escort mag and wanted to invite you over tonight. It’s, ah - I live at 1872 Highland Boulevard. Loch Nora.”
Silence.
“Yeah, so. Let me know if you can come tonight. It’s just me home. Alone tonight, and - Yeah. Just wanna show you a good time.”
More silence.
Steve gritted his teeth. A good time? Christ, what a cookie cutter thing to say. What was wrong with him? He should have just-
“Harrington?” A deep - man’s voice sounded on the other line.
And Steve's blood ran cold.

Thick arms slipping around Steve’s waist, Billy only grunts when he scoops Steve up to plop the omega in his lap. Steve weighs what he should for a guy his height. He’ll be tall, for an omega. He’s not done growing yet. Billy remembers those years but still savors the fact he has an inch on Steve. For now. Although with Steve piled in his lap like a princess that inch means nothing. Hands braced on Billy’s chest for balance, Steve perks right up when Billy shuffles on the couch to get comfortable under him. Like he expects Billy to snap at him to sit still, be calm and quiet. So Billy grins up at Steve and pops the omega’s rear with his thigh, bouncing Steve once.
“That’s better.” Billy reaches up with a casual hand to squeeze Steve’s far shoulder. “Having fun?”

For a ride I’ll fight your shitty uncle when he tries to tell you women shouldn’t be in college. For a whole holiday dinner, I’ll pretend I’m a drug dealer all night and then propose, and you can pretend to take me up on it, and anybody you introduce to your family for the rest of your life will look great.”
Steve’s mouth fell open, his brain flashing with images like somebody was out of control with a slideshow controller. “Holy shit.”
