“I’m not tired,” Tommy complains into Phil’s fur, but Phil isn’t having it. He simply purrs in apology and licks the tangles out of Tommy’s curls.

It’s silent long enough that Phil finally starts to give into the haze of sleep.

    Then, “It’s cold, Phil.”

    It is. It is cold.

Phil prays his own fever is enough to keep Tommy warm through the night.

    ---

It's hard for Phil, a cat, to look after a young toddler. It's even harder as the pair lives on the streets, getting colder by the day as winter steadily approaches.

Then the pair get picked up by a tall witch, and his tusked familiar. In the midst of a magical home, Phil learns about himself, cares for Tommy, and struggles with a sense of guilt and self-worth.

“Phil is a good man - he’s fostered before, and has a completely clean record. It would be such a shame for you to waste an opportunity like that.” She pauses, pulling up to a red light. Her fingers tap on the wheel, and the tell of nervousness causes Tommy to brace for an inevitable comment that will sour the remaining journey. “This one might even be the one, Tommy.” She stresses, fidgeting with the stereo when he refuses to respond.

As much as Tommy loves his social worker (she’s done a fuck-ton for him in the past that he could never forget), she sometimes (most times) says things that stick in him like a jagged knife.

“Let’s not get too optimistic, Mandy.” He laughs bitterly. “I’m going to this house, whether I want to or not, and I’m staying with them until they get fed up with me. That’s it. I don’t expect anything more.” He scoffs, choosing to stare out his window at the grey motorway that seemingly stretches on eternally in-front of them.

Or; Tommy is a foster kid extremely close to ageing out of the system. He ends up being fostered by Phil, and things grow from there.

”It’s a clergyman.” The demon drawled lazily. ”I doubt he’s interested in your wares.”

The teenager only huffed at the demon, as if it was an overbearing sibling rather than a fiendish creature that had crawled out of the pits of hell.

”Maybe he would be, big man, if he didn’t have you breathing down his neck.” The witch grumbled as he turned to give Wilbur a once over with inhumanely bright eyes. Sparkling with a sheen few practicers of witchcraft would dare to openly display.

”Or what do you say?” The witch said with a hellish grin. ”You’re not just window-shopping, are you?”

Or: Tired, nicotine addicted, clergyman Wilbur thought he got the better deal when he picked handling a brazen witch over spending months in seclusion.

    He was wrong.

    He wasn’t a virus.

Okay? He wasn’t a virus, he didn’t do any harm, it wasn’t even his fault he was here in the first place! Tommy grumbled, turning away from the very rude firewall.

    He wasn’t a virus.

“Whatever. Off to the next computer…” Tommy muttered, voice slightly wavering.

He walked away from the firewall and headed towards a Windows 10 device.
