Summary
PARIS, 1898: Since he could hold a brush to canvas, Verso has always been told who he was meant to be. At seventeen, a valet draws the line at who Verso is allowed to love. Just after his nineteenth birthday, Verso meets a man inside his canvas who rewrites every rule he's ever known by asking, daring, and loving. The problem? That man wasn't ever meant to exist at all. If Verso never Painted Gustave into being... how did he get into his canvas—and why can't he leave?

“Introduction via first blood?”
Verso shakes his head. Shakes his whole body—he’s trembling. Adrenaline and agony both staking their claim in his rattling bones.
“Good,” Gustave says. “I figure I’m due a name and an explanation, petit tueur.”
“Verso,” he mutters.

Summary
In a city bright with the progress of the Belle Époque, Verso lives in the shadows, grief-stricken by the 'written' fire that claimed his sister. He pours his anguish into his piano, hiding from a secret war between those who paint substance and those who write destiny.
As a brilliant structural engineer, Gustave believes a beam fails because of stress, not sorcery. But when he begins to notice a pattern of architectural disasters plaguing Montmartre, his need to fix the flaws inadvertently threatens a powerful faction manipulating Paris from the shadows.
Marked for death because he refuses to accept their narrative, Gustave is pulled into Verso’s dangerous world. The pragmatist and the artist forge a partnership: Gustave provides the logic to expose the lie, while Verso finds the courage to pick up his brush and shield the man who has become his tether to the world. Together, they must dismantle a conspiracy written in stone before the ink dries on Gustave’s final chapter.

Summary
Verso lived through the fire, as did Alicia, but he didn't wake up. He remained unconscious, and when his family realised that he and Alicia had been found in the atelier during the fire, they realised that Verso has gone into the canvas.
Aline went in after him, believing she could wake him up. She finds Verso, who doesn't remember anything. In his pain addled mind he ended up creating Lumiere, and a painted version of his family, and they were living together happily. Aline helps him remember, but all he could feel was the fire and the burning agony of his body, and so she paints over him and erases his memories again to keep him safe. Renoir then goes in to wake up his son himself, and drag his wife out the canvas, resulting in the Fracture. Expedition Zero goes out to search for their loved ones and rescue them, and inevitably find out what happened from Cleo. Now Verso has to stop his family from tearing apart his canvas, and try keep his mother from constantly erasing his memories to keep him compliant. It goes about as well as you might expect.
(Basically, Verso lived, but is trapped in the canvas by his mother, and now has to deal with the horror of having his family raging war inside his canvas)
