Summary
Sometimes in the Shades people disappear. It is simply the nature of such places, where alleyways weave twisting rat runs between squat terraces, murky sunlight poking at shadows like a child examining particularly gruesome roadkill. They are consumed by the cobbles, eaten up, reabsorbed — the city, ever a hungry beast, feasts — and that is that.
But occasionally, very occasionally, it spits things back out; the leftover bones, as it were, that litter the gutter.

Emrys stares at his reflection in the small, scratched mirror that hangs from a nail above Gaius' cot, the morning sun dripping warmth across his spine. Blue eyes stare back at him from a round, soft face, dense freckles darkening the skin beneath them. Before his first death, they had been his most notable feature — most attractive, too, he knows. Now, the scar tends to drive people away.
"I think I shall keep my eyes," he tells Gaius over the rhythmic percussion of drums outside. "Different hair colour, sharper bones. Maybe age myself up a bit." /No-one should have to be sixteen forever/, Emrys thinks, with a grimace.
