Summary
It has always been that the more intimate the setting, the stronger his fluid, shifting, feeling gets. Darryl remarked once that he doesn’t understand how Henry doesn’t get jealous, or feel guilty, being open in his marriage with Mercedes. But the fact is, Henry simply isn’t the same with Mercedes as he is with anyone else. He’s the lion to her lioness. When Gina and Greg and Jane and Kirk join the mix he is playful, flirtatious, part of a team. In hotel rooms after geology conference mixers he’s confident, in charge. A dozen different Henries in a dozen different embraces.
A little character and relationship study centred on one Henry Oak, which picked up more plot than I initially intended.

“Oh my god, is that Ilya Rozanov?” the intruder yelps like he's about to start hyperventilating. “Why is Ilya Rozanov half-naked in our kitchen, Shane?”
“Okay, I know how this looks,” Shane tells Ilya, “But I mean, technically, we are still alone. Together.”

No serious hockey fan or sports commentator worth their salt would have considered record-breaking Boston superstar Ilya Rozanov to be Shane Hollander’s rival exactly, but sleeping with a man who had a specific offense-related vendetta against him and a wrist shot like a jet engine to back it up was probably ill-advised just the same.
Or, Shane is a goalie. Ilya can’t score.

It’s Hollander’s work. Ilya knows it with one glance. The structure is too orderly, laid out neatly according to plan. There are redundancy loops and opposing threads twisted together for stability. It’s precise, complex, beautiful to witness. It will be a fucking nightmare for Ilya to pick apart.
This is why the time war has lasted so long; why it feels unending. Every action Ilya takes will be countered by a Voyageur. Every one of their moves will be undone in turn.
