Trying to please Heaven is easier said than done, though, and his secret friendship with Crowley makes earning his redemption even more difficult.
Especially since Crowley doesn't know he's an angel.

“So,” Crowley starts, looking over at the other inhabitants of the cafe. “I’m guessing this isn’t a social call.”
Aziraphale immediately looks up, ready to deny it, but he pauses his rebuttal. He missed Crowley, really. Especially after ten lonely years of sitting in the bookshop, surrounded by words but not by a wily adversary who knows how to lift his spirits.
But, as much as Aziraphale wants this to only be a friendly adversary meet-up, he needed assistance with his assignment.
Aziraphale lets out a small breath, opting to not say a word. His tendency to overthink still is unwavering, it seems.
Crowley only watches him, chuckling bitterly. “Knew it.”
Ten years after Aziraphale handed Crowley holy water, he needs his help on an assignment that is more dangerous than any of them had expected.

It was as if Crowley had not suffered enough. As if the liquid fall of toga in that squalid little tavern in Ancient Greece wasn’t enough. As if the silvery-blue doublet and confectionary travesty of a ruff in 1601 hadn’t been enough. As if those ridiculous, satiny pink shoes and the bloody chains in the Bastille hadn’t been enough.
No, apparently none of that had been enough. Apparently, some sick, vindictive fucker – whether it be from Above, Below, or the chaotic whims of Fate itself – was having a jolly good time making Crowley suffer by parading Aziraphale around in all sorts of ridiculous attire. Ridiculous attire specifically designed to drive Crowley mad.
Or: five times Crowley was preoccupied with Aziraphale's body, and one time he could act on it.

He had felt his grasp on the peaceful fragile existence for himself, for themselves, slip. Now, he stands before its shattered pieces.He dares not move. He would shatter to pieces here and now himself, if he dared so much as twitch a finger. He hardly even wonders what the humans crowding Whickber Street just like any other old place in London Soho might see. A dark man-shaped being next to a vintage car, keeping cool composure. Probably not even as much. It's reality, angel, no one notices anything.
There is Aziraphale’s voice, distant and muffled behind the window. He seems to be struggling for words. “I … I think I …”
And then it all goes very quickly.“I can’t. I made a mistake.”

A little play on: What if Aziraphale really did finish his sentence after “I think I …” when the Metatron came to take him back to Heaven after the kiss? What if he did actually say, “I think I made a mistake”? What if he changed his mind? What if Crowley did not have to wait by the Bentley just to watch Aziraphale leave?

By now, the voice in his head was screaming as loudly as it could muster, almost caterwauling. Crowley tried to shut those guttural shrieks up with a heavy inhale, his shaky breath piercing through the silence in the room like an arrow through feeble prey.
It didn’t work.
Crowley doesn’t get to say his confession before Aziraphale says his. As a result, he’s convinced the cherub only sees him as damaged, and merely wants to ‘fix’ him - his duty as an angel. Both are left heartbroken.

The little boy's eyes lit up. “Gifs” he cried, jumping up and down. “Gifs, gifs, gifs, gifs.” Somewhere at the back of the line, another child started wailing. A little girl waiting behind them, fresh from holiday pictures in a red and green tartan sweater, turned to her mother and said, “but why can’t I open my presents now. I want them now.” The severe woman’s purple painted lips curled into a smile. Behind her sunglasses, one got the impression that her eyes were smiling too. It was not a very nice smile.
