“What are you thinking, Elster?” Ariane asks, curled against my side and very naked. “What are you thinking, right now?”
And the words leave my lips before I can even attempt to grasp them, “I want a cigarette.”

Lara...she's…she's calm, she's quiet, she's kinda introverted but has this loud fiery side that only really comes out when she's into something. She talks about mythology, archeology, and anthropology-- and she fucking glows! She shines when she's in her element. And she's *kind*. That has always been Sam's first word to describe Lara Croft. Gentle, considerate, and *kind*.
But here, in front of her, is irrefutable proof that Lara can kill people without blinking. That she can decide that an entire group of people needs to die in order for the people Lara cares about to be safe.
And Sam doesn’t know which one is the real Lara. She doesn’t know if she can be both at once, or if this new, killer-Lara has overwritten Sam’s best friend.
And Sam doesn't know how to help her.
But the worst part? The part that scares her even more than those fucking lunatics?
She isn't even sure Lara wants to be helped.

She's missed this.
Lara hasn't been at Uni too terribly long yet, just a single year, but what a year it's been. So much has happened, so much has changed. There are a hundred different events from this past year she could think back on, so many things she could remember as important.
And yet, all she can think about is that ridiculous haircut and that devil-may-care smile.
But Lara...well, she isn't the most well-adjusted person, socially speaking, and she doesn't know how to deal with the way Sam makes her feel. She has *questions*, and there's only one person in her life that she knows to go to for advice.
But before she can ask Roth anything, she has to tell him about Sam. About their friendship.
And for reasons beyond her comprehension, Lara finds that idea *terrifying*.

Lara sniffles as Sam takes the warm rag away. She looks absolutely miserable, but she asks like it's the simplest thing in the world, "...can you…sing for me?"
Her voice is slurred so bad it's absurd, and Sam almost misses the request. Her brain stalls in her head. Skips, like a broken record.
She nearly laughs, but her heart is going too wild for her to manage anything more than a rough exhale. She doesn't know what to do or say here. After all, she's drunk too. Way less than Lara, but still way too drunk to have any chance at rationalizing this.
But it's her heart that eventually un-freezes her. She smiles, and it's a soft, drunk thing, "Lara, honey, you know I can't sing to save my life."
That should've been the end of it. They both know she can't sing for shit, and it's just one of those dumb requests drunk people make when they've had way too much and feel awful. If she were half as drunk as she is now, Lara would laugh, smile, and say 'oh, yeah, right. Please don't, I don't need a case of tinnitus'.
That isn't what happens, though.
No, instead, Lara looks up at her with those big, kind eyes, and asks, "...could you sing to save mine?"
