At this, her voice turns softer; the light in her eyes dim to give away to the normal amount of chocolate and galaxy she is used to presenting her corporeal being with. She shakes her head, "Not like this."
Or, Death gives Morpheus a boon — or is it a curse? Morpheus finds himself alive from The Fates' hands, but achingly human. There is a new Dream of the Endless. Hob Gadling, in the meantime, gets used to his new roommate.

There is something terribly inhuman about him, something Ethel can’t define but recognizes on the same level of awareness that knows there is something lurking behind her in the dark.
They keep a tiger in the basement, in a cage of glass and willpower, she thinks to herself, and follows Roderick back upstairs and does not sleep at all that night.
(or, ethel cripps gets sick of roderick's shit and instead of stealing from him and running away, she frees dream from his cage)

There’s not much use thinking about those times, anymore. He will always be Hob Gadling, but the biggest part of what that used to entail had stormed away on a rainy night like this one hundred and thirty years ago, and hadn’t come back.
Hob remembers the ache in his chest in 1989. He remembers the glow of the pub, so much warmer than the pale light cutting across the alley now. He remembers staring at that empty chair for hours—first with anxiety, then with concern, and eventually with bitterness.
