Jet didn't need someone else's life on his conscience. He was hardly capable of taking care of himself as it was. The only company he'd had for years was Ruby and a handful of smuggling contacts, that was all he wanted.
Nureyev didn't need another mentor. Mag was full of empty promises and lies disguised as hope. He didn't need anyone's eyes on him, not when it was so much easier to disappear.
Unfortunately for either of their plans, they happened to meet.

Summary
The thing that nobody told him about not wanting to die anymore is that some days, he still doesn’t exactly want to be alive either. He just wants to lay in bed and not exist, because it all feels pretty goddamn pointless, floating through space chasing a myth, riding along on a hope and a prayer. At least back on Mars he could pretend he was doing some good for the world, even if he was too slow to solve the cases that really mattered, even if he still remembers every death on his hands, even if some days all he can see is the destruction left in his wake.
There’s a knock at the door and Juno groans, turns over. “I told you I don’t wanna watch any streams, Rita-”
The door slides open with a hiss, letting in the first bit of light his room's seen all day. “Well then, it is a good thing that I am not Rita.” Jet’s voice is as even as it ever is, as stable as the big guy himself. “May I come in, Juno?”
