Make sure he wears sunscreen, Eddie wants to text his mother. Christopher takes after Shannon; burns easily. He needs at least SPF 50. Make sure he does his physical therapy exercises, take away his phone before bed so he doesn’t stay up all night, don’t let him get that new video game he’s been talking about, because Eddie’s done his research and it’s not age-appropriate.
He likes blueberries as a side to his pancakes, not in them. He won’t focus on his homework unless someone is sitting with him. Keep the hall light on at night in case he has a nightmare. Let him talk about the nightmares, it’s less scary when you talk about it. Don’t let Dad tell him he’s not supposed to cry.
Make sure he knows I love him. Make sure he knows I didn’t mean to hurt him, didn’t mean to scar him for life, didn’t mean to take everything familiar from him. Make sure he knows he can come back anytime— that his bed’s already made, we’ll make homemade pizza and he can laugh at me when I burn it, and I’ll let him pick whatever movie he wants to watch, even if it’s Big Hero 6 for the fifteenth time.
Make sure he knows where his home is.

Chimney’s chair creaks. Buck cranes his head over the back of the couch and watches him straighten up, pop his back, close the folder.
“You only ever ask me weird questions,” he says, and then crosses the loft to sit in one of the armchairs. He levels Buck with a look that’s way too knowing for the amount of words they’ve exchanged. “What’s up?”
He takes a breath.
“What does it feel like to be a dad?”
in which buck is used to wanting things he's not allowed to have; it's just that he never thought being a father would be one of them.

He's looking at his feet, because he hasn't quite come to terms with the fact that he's saying this in a room where other people, strangers, can hear it.
But this is still the first time he's said it this way: out loud, in a declarative sentence. Being nervous is fine. Frank said that being nervous is fine, and Buck just said he's proud, and the only thought Eddie has in his head is that it's embarrassing he can't raise his head and say it like a man, so clearly, he's going to need to hang on to other people's words for the time being, someone who isn't his dad trying to explain the ways Eddie's allowed to inhabit the world.
He doesn't need to ask anyone's permission to be who he is. That's also a thing Frank said.
in which eddie attends a self-empowerment group for gbtq men to supplement his therapy, and is empowered to: forgive himself, say "i'm gay" to his own reflection in the mirror, accidentally adopt an adult, make fried rice, and tell his straight best friend that he's in love with him. not necessarily in that order.

Eddie expects there to be no answer – last time Buck was suspended, he had to literally be dragged from the bed – and is surprised when he hears shuffling. Swinging the door open, Buck stands in shorts and workout gear and a thin sheen of sweat all over, his headphones stuck in his ears. “Uh, hi?” He asks, taking in the two, plucking his headphones out. “Sorry, did we have plans?”
“No!” Chris yells. “This is a surprise attack!”
Then he launches himself at Buck.
To Buck’s credit, he handles the preteen leaping for a hug as well as anyone could, not even taking a step back before wrapping his arms around him and lifting Chris in the air. Chris giggles as he does so, Buck even spinning once to make them louder.
And Eddie?
Eddie is undone. Eddie tells that box he has filled with Buck and feelings and thoughts to fucking shut because now is not the time to confess his love for his best friend.
*Or: All aboard the dispatcher!Eddie train, working through being on the wrong side of the phone, especially when there’s a particular firefighter who will just not use his head.

They stop by a convenience store on the way out of town so Ransom can refill his gas tank and they can load up on the disgusting snacks that neither Holster, as an officially signed member of the NHL or Ransom, as a medical student, should ever even consider putting in their bodies. After that it’s less than five minutes to the highway, and they roll down the windows and blast Nicki Minaj, and Holster tries to rap along to Super Bass, and Ransom can’t stop laughing. He’s sure that if there’s a heaven, this is what it would feel like.
Ransom and Holster spend their last summer together on the road. "Last" has never felt more like a four letter word.

Things only get more complicated from there.
