He needed Fai to love him enough to do as he said, but not enough that he couldn’t do what had to be done in the end. He needed Fai to know love and feel love to escape the fate of becoming just a heartless pawn, but feared too much love would weaken him. As much as Ashura wished otherwise, Fai could not afford to be vulnerable."

“…Am I dead?” Kurogane asks for confirmation. His voice is flat as he questions; he doesn’t fear death, and if it had to happen to keep the others safe, then that was the price he’d pay. If he’s in the same place as the real Fai, then surely it must be so. As he realizes it, he’d like to say he has no regrets, but the man lying in Fai’s lap proves that wrong. Fear not for his own soul begins to bubble up. If he’s dead, what will happen to…?
“Not yet,” Fai says quietly, his voice light and able to quell Kurogane’s thoughts immediately. “Just dreaming.”

A need for closeness wasn't news to him - Fai had been fighting that for a while now - but this was darker, more desperate and instinctual, and this newfound lack of control scared him. Kurogane's blood called to him, and even though Fai needed it to stay alive, he wasn't willing to risk tasting a single drop. If he did, he was sure he wouldn't be able to stop.
