But the next morning, Dunk doesn’t wake up with his adorable husband sprawled on top of him.
No. Dunk wakes up in a field in the middle of nowhere, with three horses he doesn’t recognize, and a sword he has no idea how to use.
When Dunk—Ser Duncan the Tall now—goes on a mission to find said husband, he finds himself in a small town called Ashford Meadow, where there’s a tourney for the hand of the one and only… Prince Aerion Targaryen.
Or: Dunk and Aerion accidentally wake up in another world. Too bad that Aerion doesn’t remember anything from his other life. But when Dunk tries to convince him of the truth, he finds that the customs of this so-called ‘Westeros’ are different from those he’s used to.
Men cannot love men, and the tourney for Aerion’s hand isn’t for the knight himself, but instead, for the Lady of the knight’s choosing.
Dunk ignores these homophobic rules and does the only thing he can: competes for himself.

In another version of this story, in some far and distant world, it is Baelor “Breakspear”, Heir to the Iron Throne, who takes his brother Maekar’s mace to the back of the head during the Trial of Seven. It is on a grimy, hay-covered stone and dirt floor that he falls into the arms of the newly named Ser Duncan the Tall and takes his last breath. In that distant world, the Targaryen family falls to ruin in the aftermath of his passing, and not even the fabled Prince that Was Promised can reclaim the might of their family name.
But that world is not this one.
For instead of the Prince of Dragonstone receiving a sundering blow to the helm, it is Aerion “Brightflame” who suffers the wound instead.

He sighed, massaging his temples. Dunk remembered Raymun's chirpy words. "How about selling nude photos online? Crazy bastards go crazy for that all the time. And, oh! Some of them pay absurd amounts!"
To be clear, Dunk was running out of money, and he had spent the last of his savings on his rent. However, he worried about the rest of his expenses, including his university fees, food, and general well-being. Raymun's ridiculous suggestion made Dunk red in the face. He protested against it, not wanting to believe that such a thing existed. Won't that be porn at this point?
