The NHL keeps a Central Registry of every team’s Emergency Backup Goaltender, or EBUG, an individual who must be prepared to play for either the home or visiting team should both goalies be taken out of commission. When the Registry was digitized in the mid 90’s a clerical error was made, and David Hollander has remained on file as Montreal’s EBUG. When Boston plays a preseason game in Montreal at the beginning of the 2017/2018 season, both of their goalies are taken out and David Hollander suddenly finds himself in the net in Boston black and yellow.

Summary
Ilya and Shane marry after Rookie season
Due to Shane being a little more aware of himself thanks to Yuna, over-prepared mamma bear, explaining all types of sex/attraction to him from a young age (“He needs to be prepared for anything! I am not pigeonholing my son!”), Shane knowns he’s crushing on, if not falling for, Ilya.
The butterfly effect occurs; this has only one outcome really. It’s a small thing. Tiny. When Ilya is not there for Shane’s Rookie of the Year award after-party, Shane is worried, needing to track down the other man, instead of slightly annoyed/upset that he would be without Yuna’s lessons.
This in turn leads him to not doing shots with Scott Hunter.
Which means only one thing: other than the whole ‘definitely being aware of falling for your rival’ tiny thing. It shouldn’t change much.
He is not drunk on that balcony with Ilya.

The original version was roughly 5000 words which I cut 1000+ from because it was a lot of me going wild in imagination land, but you guys were so lovely and said that you would like to see the full version, so I sat down and polished it and now it has doubled in length because I can't help myself. As a result, this part makes perfect sense as a standalone, but if you enjoy the idea and want a shorter version with less side character padding, feel free to read part one instead.

What if Shane and Ilya’s worlds are turned upside down and things with their over 8 year long situationship (now maybe relationship?) suddenly got more complicated and somehow simplified at the same time? Shane honestly thinks this is possibly the most ‘them’ resolution to a situation he has ever found. Ilya is just doing his best - he thinks. Maybe.
