She thought by now, desires of blood relations mending would fizzle away, but she craves the simplicity of it all.

There’s a certain intonation in his voice she hasn’t heard in a while. It takes her back to being seven, holding her knife with a weak wrist but all the conviction her little body could muster. To the late nights in the arena when he’d spar with her for real. She rarely won, but that was okay. If it was hard, that meant he was actually trying.
“We?” she stammers.
“Well, you’re not gonna learn if I do it for you.”
