Summary
“All of this excess weight puts you at increased risk for heart disease, stroke, type two diabetes, and other metabolic syndromes. It’s past time to take action, Michael.” Dr. Fawcett sits on a wheeled stool beside him. Part of what Robby likes about her is that she doesn’t treat him like a doctor. It gives him permission to misunderstand or ignore the symptoms he should have clocked in his own body much earlier. Symptoms he would have noticed in patients immediately.
“Your BMI is pushing you into a danger zone. We need to talk about diet, exercise, and addressing the level of stress in your life. Too much cortisol and you’ll just be canceling out any lifestyle changes.” Her hands are cool and professional as she palpates his abdomen. Robby considers the ceiling while she finishes his physical exam. When was the last time he used BMI in his treatment of a patient?
Message received: he has to lose weight. Doctor’s orders.

Summary
When his phone rang loud in the stillness, waking Jack from the sleep of the dead he'd perfected in war zones half a world away, he sat straight up in bed and knew: something was wrong.
His phone announced it was Dana—and it was 0721—which shot a little thrum of worry through him as he answered. "What happened?" he asked, no preamble. She wouldn't wake him if shit hadn't gone sideways.
"Robby hasn't come in yet and he's not answering his phone," she said, voice grim. "He's never missed a shift without calling." She spoke quietly, probably standing in the middle of the ED, trying to keep up a brave face for everyone else. As much as she could, anyway. People tended to notice when the fucking chief attending didn't show up to work.

Summary
On the anniversary of the blast that took his leg, Jack tells himself it’s just another shift. But when a trauma patient comes in with an injury too close to his own, the memories splinter. He finds himself on the rooftop dialing the one person he swore he wouldn’t burden. Samira comes anyway, and what starts as grief shared in silence becomes something harder to let go of.

Summary
She glanced down, behind the ledge. Is that what Icarus felt in his last moments? Was that what Abbot, and sometimes even Robby, felt when he would come to the rooftop after a rough shift? The rush of blood in her veins, the fast thumping of her heart in her chest? Feeling lighter than she had in so much time?
or, Samira wanders up to the rooftop and Jack knows where to find her.

Summary
“Absolutely fucking not.”
“Oh, come on, Samira. It doesn’t even have to be a big deal,” Jack responded, voice a hair from pleading.
Samira sat crosslegged in the corner of Jack’s worn leather sectional, the pasta he had made for dinner balanced in her lap, her head turned to where Jack sat at the other end.
“Jack,” she said, slowly, as though speaking to someone particularly dim. “You cannot just pay off two hundred and fifty thousand dollars worth of someone else’s student loans. That’s crazy.”
