Summary
Aguefort Academy's school production of Into the Woods Junior promises to be an absolute calamity if Adaine can't whip the orchestra into shape. Luckily, she's managed to acquire a trumpeter, and some of the actors don't seem all that bad - but some days it seems like playing her flute is the only thing keeping her sane, and if the musical goes badly, she's not sure even that will be enough.
Her awful sister Aelwyn seems convinced that it's going to be a disaster, and Adaine is more determined than ever to prove her wrong.

Summary
She's confused, is the thing, and her stomach is a constant roiling sea of half guilt half hope. Her parents made it very clear that raising her was a burden. And they had to bear it, up until they decided they didn’t anymore, because they gave birth to her, but Jawbone has no such obligation... So for the life of her, Adaine can't understand why he's doing this for her.
Jawbone's kindness is confusing and wonderful and guilt-inducing, and Adaine doesn't know how to repay him for it. She tries her best to be helpful, and hopes that's enough.

Summary
Adaine had never let herself hope too much about the future before. Her anxiety does the job of seeing everything that is to come like a terrible punishment, but as a diviner she knows the future encompasses the different ways life offers and she easily distinguishes what prediction or vision is inevitable or not, being destined to be the Oracle since her birth.
And in this world full of mysterious forces she will come to know that being loved is unavoidable too. And maybe make Aelwyn learn it too.

Kristen’s sleeping peacefully by her side, star-fished and hogging two-thirds of the bed, so it can’t be her. And Tracker’s lived with Jawbone for long enough that she knows his scent backwards, so it’s not him either.
Gently, careful not to disturb Kristen, Tracker sits up and extricates herself from the sheets. She pads to the doorway and pauses, listening, before heading towards the bathroom. She knocks on the door with two knuckles.
“Adaine?” she calls quietly.
