Darkness tore open with a violent scream and the confessional ceased to exist.
One second the kneeler's edge was cutting into her shins, the next her spine had met marble, cold enough to shock the air out of her. There was no memory of the space between.
She should have closed her eyes. She did not.
The robes she was used to seeing were already gone. The black wool was incinerating, splitting from the inside out and sloughing off his shoulders in smoking sheets that dropped hot flakes of ash onto her bare throat.
What remained was a scrap of white linen, knotted simply about the hips of what was neither priest nor man.
“Two years of this,” he said, breathing ozone and ice across Hermione's lips. “Two years of your rot.”
