"Damn it," Gaz rasps, his voice thick with grief. As their junker pack Alpha, he takes their personnel losses hard, and Soap has been running with Price and Gaz for months now. Enough for them to bond, for them to get used to one another, to feel that close connection all packs share back on the last planets that still support human life the way it used to be. "Soap, I can't… I…"
"Get to the Company, turn in the quota," Soap demands, his voice steadier than he feels. "I'll try to find some power to keep my walkie on. Then…if ye can…"
"We're coming back for you," Gaz says sternly. "We're coming back. Don't die on me, Tav."

“Spit it out, Kate,” he says flatly. A pain he keeps locked away is on the cusp of sneaking through the cracks of his mind.
She says something then, clearly wanting to get this over with. Something absurd and horrible and cruel. Simon can’t breathe. His ears ring. He stands up in confusion, disbelief. He’s so sure he misheard, he had to have.
“What,” he breathes out. It can’t be true. He saw the bodies. Tommy by the door, his mum slung over the counter, Beth on the couch covering Jo’s dead body. “Laswell, repeat.”
Laswell replies, but Simon can’t seem to focus anymore. He can’t feel his fingers. Why the fuck can’t he feel his fingers? “He’s alive?” He hears himself ask over the sound of his heart pounding.
“Yes, Simon, Joseph’s alive.”

Months after the murder of his family, Simon finds out his nephew is alive and in need of his help. Spurred by his brother's final wishes, Simon takes time off work to help Jo, but finds people trying to help him too. Specifically, John Mactavish, a friend of Price's. A very kind, handsome friend. A confusing mix of emotions rises in Soap at that, muddies his thoughts like disturbed silt. His nostrils flare as he snorts, lowering his muzzle so the knight cannot see the unhappy twist of his wide mouth. His ears press back. He'll admit keeping himself fed has been a lot easier with the knight's semi-weekly delivery; he hasn't had to hunt, lure, or trick for his meals in ages. But Soap has lived for many, many long years, and knows he will not go hungry.
He's…sad, he realizes. Upset that he will no longer be able to catch a glimpse of this knight, with his golden hair and masked face. He's grown accustomed to it, dare he say looks forward to their routine, even though the knight has only ever spoken to him the last time he was here.

But then Price is disappearing on a trip for some months, and in his place John is left with a man that goes only by Ghost, and sometimes seems more dragon than human.
And of course, naturally, they fall in love.

So, Soap’s a big guy. Obviously.
He’s not overly tall, but he’s wide in the shoulders and thick in the thighs. He’s the kind of big that’s naturally built all over: training muscles on top of mission muscles on top of an innate bulk.
He’s the kind of big that makes him immovable to most guys.
The kind of big that’s always been -ger than most everyone else—if not by height, than at least by heft.
So when they’re on mission and Ghost spots a grenade before Soap does, and, with no time to warn him, grabs him by the waist and flings him back behind cover, gear and all, Soap’s really not expecting to think much about it, aside from maybe, ‘Oh, shit.’
What he thinks instead is: ‘Oh-hmm.’
And then, in rapid succession: ‘Big.’
